My recently purchased 1975 BMW 2002 has a set of 15" BBS basketweave type wheels. The car needs new tires and I was planning on just taking the wheels/tires in so they cannot mess up my car. When I took the center caps off I was a little confused as the lug nuts are almost round with little cutouts. I have no experience with this type of lug nut. One of my 17mm sockets fits on it nice and tight, but when I tried to loosen a nut it spins on the nut. Other sizes don't even fit - 16mm too small. SAE doesn't seem to be the answer either. The car has the factory jack, but no lug wrench. How do I get these off?

Here's a pic that shows what the wheels look like - if it matters.

That's been tried before - results not promising.

nice car. Looks like some kinda "anti-theft" lug nut. if you don't find an answer, I'd suggest taking an angle grinder and grinding a pair of flat surfaces onto the nut, and removing them with a plumber's monkey wrench, or similar.

All 20 lugnuts on the car are like that. I thought maybe it was some BBS thing or a BMW thing. I'd ask the guy I bought the car from but he is out of town for a couple weeks and I want to get new tires now. Maybe I will just take it in to the tire place and play dumb and see what happens.

looks a lot like my Gorilla "anti-theft" lug nuts.
some aftermarket rims come with "lockable" lug nuts. You can usually get one from Discount tire, but you have to have some sort of proof that you have them...ie. drive the car into the store. I think it was like 7 dollars when I had to buy one that my girlfriend lost.
spline drive. I had them on my old tiburon.. not a bad lugnut.. as long as you do not lose the wrench that fits it

Can I delete this whole thread now? They are a kind of anti-theft lugnut...turns out I have the key/tool - didn't look like a regular key so I had forgotten about it.
The link shows sorta what the key looks like. Why is there no smiley for dumbass?

You don't want them because they aren't normal. Just send them to me, I'll pay for the shipping for ya

That's what they are. They say Gorilla right on them.

Very funny quote from the story involving the shotgun:
"Nobody else was there, and he wasn't intoxicated," Wilson said.
So that means he didn't utter the famous phrase "Hey, hold my beer and watch this!"
we all make stupid mistakes.. thankfully you made yours in thinking you did not have the key for those lugnuts... you could have gone a LOT further with it in trying to get them off of the car.
Both that BMW and Huntsville Alabama look pretty nice.

Thanks. Picked the car up a couple months ago for near challenge prices. There is some rust in the floors, but the rear strut towers are solid and that seems to be the trouble spot. Runs well - has some issues I still need to deal with. The tires are too big. They are 195/60-15's and they are dry rotted and two don't hold air so well. Going to replace them with 195/50-15's which are closer to the factory diameter. Then it won't look like a donk wanna be.
Those are referred to as "tuner lugs" and are the only lugs that will fit the modern multi-lug pattern wheels. Most any tire shop will have the keys for them if you didnt. I collect the keys just in case I wind up buying a car that has them.
They are not designed as a theft deterrent. That is what wheel locks are for.
