Under challenge budget buy-in, bad auto trans ( in a Honda, whaaaaaaat? )
Bad color, good paint (bright red, yuck)
NOT RUSTY!
Quick Googlation confirms it is relatively straightforward to swap the abort-shift auto for a handshaker (std) box.
Is this true? Has anyone here experience with this trans-transplant? Can I put ATTS in & have SH experience? What trouble spots should I look for on a Prelude of this vintage?
Trouble spots is oil burning and rust.
Going from what I've heard and not personal experience: No, you can't add ATTS without the engine to match. The blocks are different. Manual swap should be pretty straight forward.
I'm a 3rd gen guy, haven't owned a 5th gen yet
I'm pondering the same thing, except it's a ridiculously clean sixth gen Accord EX coupe, and they want to trade for my truck.

Always liked these Preludes, with those clean, handsome, broad-shouldered lines. Honestly, I wouldn't be worried about ATTS as it has issues with added power (I believe) and when Car & Driver tested one, the system failed partway through the test and they couldn't tell the difference without it.
In that same test, they ranked the Prelude SH the best handling car for under $30,000. It beat out the BMW 318ti, MX-5 Miata, 4th-gen Camaro Z/28, Contour SVT and Eagle Talon TSi, so they thought pretty highly of the car. They said "The Prelude holds a Ph.D. in precision. The steering was sharp at all speeds, in all curves. Body roll was minimal, and squat and dive barely perceptible. Understeer was prevalent but so subtle we had to think about it." High praise, indeed.
Yeah, the 5th gen Prelude was the last of the fantastic double-wishbone Hondas, the SH setup is neat but wholly unnecessary. More than anything it sucks that the H-series aftermarket is rapidly dwindling since the K-series is the new Honda hotness (and with good reason).
stand by as I math

Busy busy busy at work, just want to work on swap parts list/price/availability.
Mentioned to wife this (current) subject of my infatuation last night & woke up alive. I'll call that the "silent maybe".
I would go for it. H22A4s are really fizzy little motors. 197 horsepower NA out of a 2.2 litre inline four that revs beyond 7000 RPM, in a car with well-tuned fully independent suspension and a great shifter. What's not to like?
Parts for this look to be in the $1500 range. Parts car time?
If all goes well, I'm trading my truck for this. As a potential future Honda owner, it is my duty to say "Sure, why not?"
Someone buy this one quick! NMNA, just scanning CL at the mention of Preludes.

Interesting, I see it has the rare "Lsd posse transmission" and "Vtech". Pity it's the ugly 4th-gen

Don't see many 'ludes anymore. They either rusted away or have been slaughtered by ricers.
I bought an auto 5th gen with bad trans. Guy had it at the dealer, heard the price to replace and put it up on the 'net. We drove over there with cash and did the title on the spot. Amazingly it drove to our place without O/D but the trans was pretty far gone.
We just replaced it with a junkyard bit and resold it a week later for some extra cash, but I also owned a manual version for a short time and I LOVED the feel of that car. Would definitely own another one.
So the story is that the PO just changed trans fluid, right before trans "blowed up".
It won't find reverse, hard shifts into 1st & has no oomph. Didn't drive it.
He indicated he'd take $1k.
I'm wondering if they didn't use Honda fluid & that's what the issue is?
In reply to etifosi:
That sounds more like they only put in a fraction of what was taken out. I've never heard of a trans failing THAT catastrophically from not using OE fluid.
