My dream build is a tiny AWD electric city car. Think minimal range requirements, a grocery getter that will have the stones to pull on most things, wrapped in a little classic car shell without flares or wings or other give-a-ways. A nice big Power Dial on the dash, so I can dial it down for easy driving, and dial it up for shenanigans. It's gotta turn well, top speed will be unimportant, and I don't care at all about the existing car other than preserving the exterior. Think R/C car body and chassis but connected a bit better.
Where is the library of knowledge that I will need? What's the best forum, who's written the best up to date books, what builds should I be looking at? And what's the best platform to copy suspension geometry from?
And who's seen the Tesla powered RZR videos? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjN-Zy958bw
Start with the AEM website, some good overviews there.

But the easy solution is to start with something like a Bolt or a Miev and put an old car on top. Your big Power Dial is just a way to rescale the accelerator pedal signal.
Those cars are way too large to fit and not nearly fast enough. I was thinking of starting with a partial crosskart suspension kit / plan, but I'm not sure it would be strong enough, and I need to fit 2 people, because things like this should be shared.

I'd spend some time familiarizing yourself with the laws in your area. If you're looking to build from scratch, that'll be different than modifying an existing car.
And check out some of the ideas at DPcars.net.
Those AEM videos are great.
Local laws are a huge consideration

Before jumping in, be sure to assess total cost. It's not just the motor, but also a motor adapter, batteries, controller, inverter, and very likely a dash. All that can add up to more than a gas engine swap. Not saying don't do it, just go in with both eyes open.
We're past the point where "it's cheap" is the only reason to build an EV, though.

Especially if it's other people's money!
Yeah I saw the forum. Haven't joined yet. Very much in the early stages with this.
