Anyone know how to make a 4 cyl water cooled non-turbo VW sound like anything worth listening to?

Don't know current prices, but a buddy of mine had a mkiv r32 golf. Stock exhaust had a dual mode muffler, baffles opened up electrically at high rpm, high throttle. He wired a switch to open them whenever, and it sounded phenomenal.

Last night a kid in an e46, 328i passed me. Had some aftermarket exhaust on it. He was driving like an ass, but the car sounded fantastic. Almost made me go searching craigslist. BMW straight sizes sound really good when uncorked a bit.

Just bought a 2006 Mustang GT with a CAI and flowmasters for $8500. It sounds pretty glorious.

I can't get enough of how my stock '13 GT sounds. I'm tempted to put an exhaust on it.

........maybe thats what I should spend my bonus on....

Any small 4cyl with a small blower on it. Probably because I have watched too much 037/Delta S4 footage and find the scream/whine of the blower to be incredible.

Any small engine with uncorked independent throttles. This definitely includes rotaries. The sound of mine changed dramatically when I want to 4x42mm, and it was all for the better. It's best to have a quiet exhaust so you can hear the intake noises.

Stock European exhausts from the 80s/90s (from before the sound legislations) usually sound pretty good. If you want a good backing track, watch the E34 M5 scenes from Ronin.

You might be able to put together something with an Audi 20v five, equalish-length header, and a huge turbo for under $10k.

I like how my bastardized RX7 sounds.

I also like the BMW sixes, they almost always sound good.

As an owner of one of those engines, semi-corked, in an MR2, I concur.

Also, any VR6.

I think that these puppies are like 350 dressed or something silly like that. They are LIGHT! It is a 60 degree so it is already tiny right there. I found NO ONE that acutally tuned them though. No swaps into other cars. If you have some links please shoot me an e-mail. I still love this motor and want to put it in SOMETHING!

The downfall is finding the Lincoln ls transmission for rwd.....tuning wise, they can either be tuned using the stock ecu by getting an unlocked sct tuner and getting someone in the sho community to do it, or standalone. I personally don't know off the top of my head for the latter tuning option, but the best writer for sct tunes lives in Asylum, Illinois.

Geezus, how did you find a deal like that? Around here they're still advertised around $15-18K. What kinda mileage?

The odometer is the catch - 175k on the clock. Still - owned by an ME who did all of his maitenance, synthetics since day 1, etc. She's got some miles, but she's got more to give.

Was initially advertised at $10,500, then dropped to $9,750 / make offer. I offered $8k, cash in hand, no bullE36 M3. He came back at $8500. I said yes.

The old Stincoln sounds pretty good to me. Interestingly, at some point a former owner did away with the mufflers but retained the itty-bitty tail pipes. It goes from a 2.5" H-pipe to what looks to be 2" pipes sans mufflers. It has a decent rumble and a bit of a "rumpity-rump" as well.

I have a soft spot for SBF noise too. Most I6s sound good. I even know of some industrial I6s that sound nice.

Can we include motorcycle engines? Triumph Triples, huba huba!

My most hated engine noise comes from GM V6s, especially 4.3 vortechs. Yuck!
