A sedan may cover 90% of all use cases of a car.
A hatch may cover 99% of all use cases, with basically zero downside.
Its far more cost effective to rent 1% of the time vs. 10%
I found that the hatches I owned (And loved) all came in very handy. It's not at any point convenient to rent a truck to get a desk home from staples, or a rocking chair, or any number of oddly sized sundries that do not easily fit into the trunk of a sedan or into the back seat.
This year I get my 900 back on the road, It will be a relief to drive that occasionally over my SUV
I think the styling of many current sedans is amplifying the disadvantage Vs. a hatch. Look at most new sedans- the rear glass is hatch shaped, extending far rear of the roof. The deck lid is small. This makes for a small, odd shaped openings, with much of the trunk space under the parcel shelf. I rented a car a while back that had a good sized trunk- but my kid's stroller would not fit through the opening. Had to swap it for another car with a better shaped opening. Why not just just open the glass with the deck lid, like the old 5dr Mazda 6's? The car would look pretty much the same.

I would be 100% fine if they discontinued every single sedan out there. I really, really, really, really hate sedans. They are disgusting.
Just give me my lovely wonderful coupes.
Coupe - any vehicle with a rear seat volume smaller than 33cu.ft.
Sedan - any vehicle with a rear seat volume larger than that.
So we can keep 4 door coupes, right?
Subaru Imprezas are 4 door coupes.

Here we go again
Actually that's a new one on me. But irrelevant.
So what CUV is worth going out and test driving? I'm curious...
