The Bernie Ecclestone-level silliness is finally being dropped starting next year! (Presumably Bernie shed a silent tear at the news )
Also they'll be trying quick charges dumping 4kwh into the car in 30sec:

This plus the stupid-quick Gen3 car should make for some good racing:

For someone like me who has a really hard time following any televised competitions, but is really intrigued by formula-e, is there a good place to get a general overview of things?
Im interested in the subject enough to click into this thread, and ignorant enough to not have a clue what is being discussed.
This video's obnoxiously edited but pretty informative about the race format, it's mostly similar to F1 apart from the qualifying:
Most unlike F1 is that the cars are heavily standardized, it's more like a spec racer series with relatively little customization allowed.

They are also much, much slower than F1 cars. Direct lap time comparisons are hard (they don't run the same circuits, probably precisely for this reason), but figure they're closer to F3 or W series times than F1.
They have run some of the same circuits, Monaco being one of them. The Porsche Cup cars were the only thing Formula E was faster than.
The gap to F1 will be reduced when the Gen3 cars are out next year, but yeah an F1 car has roughly 3x the power of a Gen2 and 2x the power of a Gen3 while weighing about 100kg less than the lighter Gen3.
I don't watch F1 (or any racing) so the lower speeds don't bother me. I have a hard time following anything. Racing, sports, anything. I don't even keep up on the latest music gear. I don't know if I'll be able to get into F-E, but I'm interested in it enough to invest a few hours learning and watching to see if it breaks the cycle.

I thought they used a different (shorter) configuration at Monaco?
Edit: went and looked it up. They did up until 2021 -- the last couple years were mostly the F1 configuration though, with some minor changes to the nouvelle chicane. F-E pole was a 1:29.8, F1 was a 1:11.3. The Porsche supercup cars were 1:34.
