I'm gonna reach out here too and see if there's anybody that has had this experience.

I have a 1/96 318ti with the M44 motor and EWS2. I took apart the intake manifold, coolant hoses and wiring to replace parts. Now I'm getting no crank at all when I turn the key. My battery reads 12.6+ volts and all my accessories work. No blown fuses. The wiring is all connected up to the correct connectors. I cannot hear my fuel pump priming, but can hear/feel either my fuel pump relay or my DME relay clicking when I turn the key on.

Looking at my starter solenoid, I'm not getting power between post 1 & 4 whether the key is off or in position 2. I haven't tried measuring voltage in the start position yet.

I also got the following fault messages via INPA. I cleared them and tried to crank the car again; only the wheel speed sensor faults came back. When in DIS/GT1, the computer tells me that my key code (I'm using key #4) is communicating to my EWS perfectly fine.

The top right mint green relays are my fuel pump/DME relays I believe. I hear/feel the left one click. I've swapped them and have only left the left on click. A quick search shows that it is my fuel pump relay, yet I can't hear my fuel pump priming. This isn't my picture so I don't have the purple relay in mine.

So do wise GRM'ers know what can be going on with my car? Do you think I shorted my EWS module when I wasn't being careful?

just a hip-shot, but have you checked your clutch switch or neutral safety switch? Maybe the car thinks its in gear with the clutch out and thus will not turn the starter?

the sporadic EWS fault codes seem to be the ones that will give you a no crank condition. maybe needs a re-sync? Other than that, back to basics, what was touched/disconnected/reconnected during the work?

Call Turner, order EWS delete chip or injector programming. Remove that evil thing from your car.

I did this and it still fried my DME after awhile.

My ti is a 10 or 11-95 production, M42 but magically had EWS2 on it. Same problem you had led to an attempt to replace the conforti chip to a TMS ews delete chip, and ews wiring delete. It worked for roughly 4 months and then something killed the DME. Your milage may definitely vary(and I hope it does)

In reply to Oldtin:

Hence buying the E30 318is stuff from you. I'm about 50% finished with a new chassis harness(bmw connectors are stupid) to get rid of everything but lights.

Clean and tighten the battery terminals. Always a first thing on a no crank.

did you remove a wire when doing the other things and forget to reconnect it ?

I see key codes, have you tried different keys (idk if it even an issue with e36's but worth a shot if you have a spare)

Also check the actual battery wiring going to the starter, start simple then worry about the more expensive/complicated stuff.

My car doesn't have a clutch safety switch, so that is ruled out.

Battery terminals are tight.

I have taken apart everything to look for loose wires, and have found none.

This is why I don't think my key is at issue.

I did send out my injectors to be cleaned. I got them back and plugged them in too.

I've been probing all my starter terminals with respect to ground and get 0v with no key, key in position 2, and key in start position.

What can I conclude from this?

Stupid question, but did you check your security system for any odd codes?

Those were the EWS fault codes that I got in the original post. I cleared them and tried to crank the car again. No crank, and none of those codes came back.

I also had a no crank, no start today. Try checking the main ground that goes from the chassis to the block. I forgot to fasten mine, then when it did, it cranked. Electricity needs to go in a loop to work.

I didn't touch that ground strap. I even tried to bypass the EWS today, with no luck.

I'm throwing in the towel with this. I'm having it towed to a shop and having them diagnose it.
