I'm specifically interested in e36 and e46 models. Did only 'is' cars have an LSD or was it an option on others models? If so, is that information in the VIN?

I was thinking LSD ended on the early 1996 e36. After that it's traction control. Before that, look for models with the winter package (heated seats are a big tip off), or you could get LSD as a standalone option.

yes.. early 96 was the last of the non-M cars to get LSDs. If you find a car with traction control, it does not have an LSD

M3 is your best option...

what is sad.. from reading some european magazines where people put LSDs into the 135 and 335.. the LSD AND the traction control work great together. You can get the power to the ground with both wheels.. and if you should get it out of shape... the TCS kicks in to reign the rear in.
