Did BMW ever make either a 3 or 5 series M edition wagon? Thinking to myself that would be a badass in a 6 speed DD. I know they made some sweet XI 3 series wagons but the gas mileage in those sucked horribly.

Me too, I have never seen a factory M wagon BMW. Seen a few home built and I wonder how hard and expensive that would be starting with maybe a 5 series sportwagon.
There have definitely been e60 M5 touring. I don't know if they were sold in the US though, but I'm certain that it's V10 can suck as much fuel as a jet fighter. A fun DD for sure, but not an economy car
Ok so the bluprint is out there, it would just cost a E36 M3load to biild from a touring edition. E34 would be my best bet to make myself and would probably be the least cost prohibitive too.
yes and no.. I would start with an E39 M5 and an E39 touring and combine. if you have them both in your garage....
SlickDizzy wrote: BMW built an official E34 M5 Touring as well; once again, never sold here.
But a few have made it over here. I actually saw one a couple of times in NJ and PA about 10 years ago (40 miles apart, but I have to assume it was the same car - they're just too damn rare). When I spent more time in BMW circles you'd see them pop up for sale once in awhile, but I'd imagine they're even more coveted now.
I used to dream of an E36 Touring M3: Get the roof and rear clip from a Euro wagon and graft it onto a US M3/4/5. Then it would retain the M3 VIN and be easier to register/inspect/insure where I live.
Come on up north. M5 Touring
The hot combo for me would be wapping all the good bits off an E46 M3 to the E46 Touring. The five series is a german buick.

Agreed. They've been built, both officially (one is in the BMW collection) and unofficially, such as Rogue Engineering's build:
BMW does sell wagons with an M package, although it's all appearance. Here is one I stumbled across just this week.

Roadmaster with a six speed would be awesome too

As far as the 3 series I would want an xi touring to convert. Awd M touring
i was thinking recently about this, but with a slightly different approach. I would start with an e39 528i touring. (I believe the 28's have better front subframes and steering setups).
Then I would add an LSX and a six speed. German CTS-V wagon.....

Lsx and getrag = $$$$$ and probably massive fabrication, I have no fab experience as of yet

There are some swaps already done, and the parts are being manufactured and sold by the guys that have done the swaps. Can't comment on quality or fitment, but 'bolt-in' parts are for sale.
I agree that LSX and manual = $$$$$, but so does ANY BMW M engine and related manual transmission. I might venture to guess that LSX and t56 or whatever would be much cheaper than an e46 m3 motor or e39 m5 motor. Maybe an e36 s52 would be slightly cheaper than an LSX.... but that's 240hp vs 400ish.

VASBMW has a build thread about his e34 540 touring LSx/AT swap over in the projects forum. His was started as a solution to a ZF AT failure. According to him the swap was cheaper than a replacement ZF trans. IIRC, the hardest part of the swap was exhaust pipe routing on the driver's side.
What do you think about this, supposedly a 1994 5 series touring alpina
only problem is it only has 2 pedals
looks pretty freaking sweet to me. bummer about the title issue though. Worst case you could buy a different car and swap everything over...
In reply to ryanty22:
The badge on that eBay car says B10 Allrad, which according to the Alpina Archive website was based on the 525ix - an all wheel drive car with a 2.5 liter six engine. Since this car has a V8 and rear wheel drive, it looks like someone went crazy with Alpina stickers.
This build thread (LSX into an e39 wagon) is insane. The guys' fab skills are amazing, as are his photography skills.

I have a major pining for a slammed E34 wagon in white and on M parallels. I just talked my cousin into looking at one this weekend as the SC300/SC400s he was after are not panning out.

S54's used to be kind of cheap before the club racers started hoarding them......same way LSx's were cheap prior to this "Swap all the things" fad started.
Now you might as well just add a snail to a 2.5L car and throw a 5/6sp behind it. More thrust, much cheaper.
Others have offered the basic contours, but I want to spell out all the different variants: BMW Produced 2 official "M" wagons: An E34 and an E61. Neither of these officially came to the States, although there are E34s floating around. http://sportwagon.blogspot.com/2014/11/bmw-m5-e61-touring.html
They developed prototypes for both an E46 M3 Wagon and an E39 M5 wagon. These were never produced however. http://sportwagon.blogspot.com/2014/11/bmw-m5-e39-touring.html
There are custom-builds of E30 M3 Wagons, E46 M3 Wagons, E39 M5 Wagons, and plenty of E34 5er Tourings with M3 engines and the like.
BMW has no plans to produce an F11 M5 Wagon. The closest F31 M wagon will probably be a 335iT (maybe even a 335isT)
