Bought a 95 Miata from a buddy. He had it parked outside under a tree. When I got it home I found (saw) a mouse in the trunk and evidence of others. Any proven way to get rid of them (no burning allowed) without harming the family dog?

I'm disappointed. No one said LSX powered flame thrower yet.

Wilsarin bait.

It's not a blood thinner, it's just treated cellulose.

The little buggers eat it, dry up and die. They usually leave the nest before doing so because they're looking for water.

Works great on the rats that try to set up housekeeping under my hottub every winter.

I hate when that happens. There is usually an odor as well. Open every thing up and start inspecting possible nesting sites. Shop vac is handy. Air box, heater housing, behind kick pads. This way you get rid of stored food, nests and mice. Also look for any damage caused by chewing. Have fun

Once you get it as clean as possible Fabrees on the seats and carpets. 2-3 heavy applications (damp to the touch) and seal the car up between them for 24 hours will go a long way to getting the "funk" out. If the car is sitting in the sun it works better.

The car is now sitting in field behind my house soaked in animal repellant and baited with poison traps. I will see later today how (in)effective this approach has been.

Snake, it can get into the tight places the cat can't. Wrap whatever wiring you can get to in honda's wrap tape and there are some effective repellent sprays that are bitter or pepper based on amazon.

How do you get a mongoose out of a Miata?

Air Sponges work pretty well for getting rid of reek from an interior as well. Buy a bunch, put one in with the car in the sun and swap them out when the stuff inside starts to shrink.

I remember a car that came out of pole barn winter storage. When we opened the hood, we found a freeze dried mouse laying midway on firewall ledge and inches away a freeze dried weasel caught in the brake lines and wiring by the master cylinder. We figured the mouse had a heart attack and the weasel starved or froze to death.

Snap traps, the kind with a metal trigger plate, adjust engagement for hair trigger, bait with generous amount of peanut butter, make sure some is under the trigger plate. Buy and deploy more than you think you'll need.

Also check above the gas tank too. I stored a racecar in a pole barn for a winter once. No sign of mice. When I went to change the fuel pump, there was a mouse nest on top of the tank.
