I spent a few months back in 2007 looking at used Boxsters before deciding that they really weren't what I was looking for. This year, I was on the hunt for a late 80's 911. I had a few close calls, but still haven't found the right car and began to get frustrated.
I read the thread about cheap Boxsters a few weeks ago and just shook my head, figuring that I knew better. Then I stumbled upon this thread about a Boxster with a Zeintop:

I had seen Zeintops before, but I thought they were too expensive. It sounds like the price is coming down. With Boxster prices heading in the same direction, it might make for a nice combo. I may have to keep my eyes open for a 2.7 Boxster in need of a new top.
That looks great. Completely changes the appearance of the Boxster.
That's pretty nifty. Looks like a Cayman now.
I've never heard of nor seen that top, but it looks fantastic. So much better looking than the regular Boxster hard top.
I wonder if that would pass muster with car clubs that normally forbid Boxsters at track days.

Why would they forbid them?

My local BMWCCA forbids all 'verts, on the basis that instructors weren't happy riding in them with newbie students.
I've never run in a PCA driver's ed event, but second Pigeon's comment regarding the BMWCCA track events. Most car clubs won't let convertibles on track, even if they come from the factory with pop up roll bar protection. Some make exceptions for pop up roll bars AND hard tops, some don't.
This unfortunately can happen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7Q5ZeV5ud0

That happens in hard top cars. The roof can compress as much as 6 inches or more.
'Verts are fine with a properly installed, and built, rollbar. I'd say they're safer with the top up than a hard top car with no rollbar protection. With the top down you run the risk of flinging out your arms and rolling over them in the process. I usually follow my instructor's preference.
I didn't mean to imply any opinion on 'verts, rollbars, etc. Simply that roll over can and do happen at HPDE's, so safety is a legitimate concern.
I agree that properly installed rollbars are great ideas. I'd much rather have that than pop up factory protection.
I can't find the thread just now, but a guy recently posted pictures here of his track day Boxster. He installed a fixed rollbar and runs a hard top. It looked great.
Is zeintop a Boxster hardtop essentially?
^^^ More than a Boxster hardtop but rather an add on top that also requires the old trunk lid to be removed and replaced with a new one to create a fastback, hardtop look.
I like that, but I also like the regular boxter hard top...its unique.
A hardtop-equipped Boxster ran at the NASA Nats a year or two go. It looked really good in person.
I've never seen that....and suddenly I find Boxster's that much more desirable.....beautiful!
Zeintops can be ordered online from www.zeintec.com I bought mine there, it arrived in a KIT form, primed parts, all hardware included right down to the ashers and shim plates, instructions etc... the service is world class.
