Quite frankly one of the more hilarious and awesome save videos that I've seen. Some quick thinking and now he just needs new brakes and tires, instead of a new car.

Huh, maybe the scandi isn't such an obsolete technique after all. And he probably doesn't even need new tires, drifters don't toss theirs after the first high-speed entry do they?

Drifters also don't care about hashed motor mounts or suspensions or... anything at all, really.
If those tires were flat spotted, they should be pitched. Tires are cheaper than a car.
They probably don't have flat spots since the wheels were probably turning throughout the slide, is what I'm saying.
though he made the save, he didn't do it hard enough (for optimal saving while stopping in a straight line, opposed to turning like a rally pro) ideally you get the vehicle to rotate while maintaining the same direction of travel while spinning. The reason is that rotation consumes more energy and will stop the car from traveling in it's current direction more quickly, the danger, which is extreme, two fold though, one is that you're more likely to NOT continue in the current direction of path while spinning, and two is that if you don't stop before making impact an impact while rotating is far more dangerous due to the additional lateral forces at the time of impact.
At least he noticed early enough to try that, when I boiled my brakes I found out deep in the braking zone, left my mark on the armco at the NCM track turn 1.
Nothing like having your brakes boil on a red and then completely forget that fact in your panic to get racing again -until the next corner.
The GT500 was pretty much strictly a drag racer. I have read numerous reports about the stock brakes only being good for 2 to 3 hot laps (at a normal sized track) before they were too hot stop even a go-kart.
I had that happen once on Summit Point's Shenandoah Circuit, albeit at much lower speeds. I used up all of my stock Fairmont brakes slowing for The Loop. I then forgot about that, and hit the throttle for the short straight. I also forgot about the next turn, apparently. When I went for the brakes I had none. I said, "Whoops! No brakes!" and pitched the car sideways. I ended up with an extremely late entry, clipped the apex, and then had to explain to the instructor that no, I wasn't interested in coming to the drift event next week, because I don't drift.

Ahh, did you just use the words "stock", "Fairmont", and "Summit Point" in the same sentence?

And I thought I was the odd one for having a 2002 Escort sedan as a track car...

It's worth the watch.

@Toyman: Thanks for the kind words.
@WildScots: Just because I'm weird doesn't make you any more normal! :)

"You've never heard of the Millenium Escort??? She's the sedan that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs! She's fast enough for you, old man." LOL, I kill me
Newb question: Is it gas and counter-steer in a situation like that (like a drift) or is it just pitch and pray (no gas)?

If you are a fan of the humorous application of the Ford Escort, watch the original Police Academy until you notice the "police Escort". I swear, I was the only person in the theater to get that joke. Better yet, next time you have your car at the track, put a Kojack light on the roof, and see if anyone gets it.

Point of clarification: On that day, the brakes were stock, and that was about it. The biggest problem with the stock front brakes was the 302 sitting between them putting 270 horsepower to the wheels. I have since upgraded to '93 Mustang sized brakes with decent pads, but to keep things interesting, I've also upgraded to a 347 laying down something close to 400, plus or minus. Fun stuff on 225/50-15s.
