I wouldn't agree, either. Konis are pretty "blah" on Miatas.
Can you equal or better VMaxx Track Pack performance for the same or slightly less money with a bunch of deal hunting and work? Maybe.
Is the Track Pack an awesome easy button? Yes. Me Gusta Track Pack.

Well I guess ive been greatly underestimating the vmaxx. I always assumed them to be another import coilover to appease the masses
Some people assume the same about the Miata Just an import to appease the masses.
I've got a 1990 that's still on all original suspension and I think I've made up my mind to do konis from goodwinracing ( they got 3 different perches for the springs so you can basically lower the car a bit while still using stock springs like I plan on doing ) plus probably the cheapest full bushing kit I can find.
I'm probably only keeping the car for another 1.5 years max so I'm really trying to keep it as budget as possible while getting decent parts. Plus my front right shock is blown and one of the lca bushings up there ripped from a ball joint failure earlier this year.

There's a difference between Vmaxx and FM Vmaxx, fwiw. The "normal" Vmaxx is probably crap. I've been in 3 different Track Pack equipped Miatas at this point, and every last one of them impressed me.
It's a good setup. And doesn't really even need the left handed remark afterwards of "... for a sub-$1000 setup."
It's just good. And easy.

Ah! That makes sense, I thought it was one in the same. Keith does that mean yall have them revalved and whatnot?
I had Vmaxxes on my 96 and they were awesome. New owner loves them too. Great for autocross and hillclimbs (tarmac rally)
