So, I am trying to make a decision. The wife is (im)patiently awaiting the arrival of her BRZ. Which got me thinking. Our current stable includes her '90 CRX Si and '69 Bug (project), and my '98 328is, '94 Miata (converting to HPDE status), and '80 KZ440. All are great cars. But the BRZ, when you break it down to the nuts and bolts, is a lot like the E36. Weight, power, soforth. So, why not sell the BMW, and get a 4x4 utility vehicle? Something good in the snow, and could be used for odd jobs. To this end, I was thinking Jeep Cherokee (XJ). I could probably sell the BMW and get into one for the same amount. So that would be a wash. I grew up learning to drive in 4x4 trucks, and like them well enough. Just not really sure I can give up the 3 series for one. Thoughts? Opinions?

Try it. If you don't like the XJ, sell it and buy an E36 Neither are particularly difficult to find.

That's easy. Keep the BMW and buy a Cherokee.

OR sell the BMW to me and buy an XJ!

So is the 4x4 going to be your daily? If so, only you can answer that question. If it's a spare vehicle, then why not?

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Got your race car (miata), fun DD (BRZ), and other things.

You need an XJ.

XJs and Miatas go hand in hand.

Im a big fan of XJs. As long as you're not buying them for your teenage first time driver or putting huge tires on them with stock gears and brakes..

Seriously, i agree with whats already been said.

The guy i work with just bought (for his sister) the nicest pre-98 cherokee ive ever seen for $3800 with a small lift done right, nearly new 31" goodyears, a good looking repaint, decent stereo w/sub, tint, etc.

Speaking of which.... i'm about to do a 2.5" lift on mine. I'll need some input on tires and gearing stuffs.

Depends on what you want from it - my wife has an XJ that I get to drive regularly. They're long lived when looked after and about as complex as a box of rocks, but I don't think I'd give up an E36 for one. But that's just me...

They're not very good tow vehicles, but as a cheap-ish durable 4x4 I think they're hard to be and both upgrades and parts are cheap.

I'll help you out, sell me the 69 VW project for cheap.

I wouldnt give up an e36 for one when almost anyone can afford to buy an XJ outright anyway.

But i would give up an e36 when you already have a BRZ, Miata, CRX, and some kind of sport bike.

Amen. They are like peanut butter and jelly. One for the winter and for the summer.

I for one was not impressed with any XJ I looked at in Omaha. The winter, she does terrible things.

That is also a fear. Still much deliberation to do. Thanks for all the input.

Why not a Subaru rather than a Jeep?

If you think aN '80KZ440 is a great car, then you'll love an XJ.

I've been driving my miata for the last month or more and when I jumped in the GF's '98 XJ with the 4.0 and automatic, I had to wipe the look of surprise of my face. I forgot what torque felt like.
