Yeah, 324 is fast, especially considering the drivetrain (most other guys at this level are running blown alcohol Hemis or crazy Kenny Duttweiler turbo small block Chevys) but an FIA event they went 415 and change, which is insane.

Real neat engines. Of course, they weren't designed to be performance engines
400/550 sounds like performance to me
The port layout was less than good, and the intake manifolds were designed primarily for hood clearance. The carb flange was about the same height as the valve cover rails, so the plenum was pretty much in the valley.
They were smooth as a first priority. Kind of proof of that is that the horsepower is so low relative to torque.

Correction, it has gone 415mph. And with 2000hp a piece (twin-engined) on stock blocks and cranks. Of course, the block is cast out of Arma-Steel so they are beefy as hell. The big weakness on 472/500s is that the stock connecting rods and valvetrain is not happy over 3500rpm. Replace the rods, pushrods and rocker arms and it is ready to party
From what I can find that record run was set with a single 8.8L engine. They have multiple engines for the car for competing in different classes.
Perfectly square engine, too. 4.3" bore & stroke. Pretty cool. Always wanted to have one.

Well that and it's 500 cubes.
Its not a revver but 400/550 is performance all day long, no matter how you get it. Big block chevelles were performance cars. How much power did they make?
A pair of 500s popped up for sale in Facebook a few months ago. But in true GRM fashion, I was flat broke.
I have no use for one at the moment, but I find them fascinating.
