Clutch finally started slipping on the way home from the track this weekend, at least it waited until on the way home!

On the E30s, you can shave down the big outer ring on the back side......is the 1.6 miata flywheel similar? How much can safely be shaved, if you can? I think stock is 18?

An aftermarket flywheel is out at the moment due to cost. Saving that money towards a 1.8 swap for the end of next season.

I wouldn't bother......if you're doing a swap that soon, just throw in a disc only for now.

Why?

If he is that close to doing a drivetrain swap, I don't see the gain to be had.

You can run a 1.6 flywheel on a 1.8 so call it a start on a swap

My thought was the flywheel will need to get resurfaced anyway, an extra $30-40 to knock some weight off would be OK.

When I do the swap I plan on doing something like FM's clutch happy meal anyway.

Just need it to get me through one more event this year and probably 10-12 weekends next year.

I guess if you're fine with the cost, go for it. How much are aluminum flywheels for miatas? JW

I agree - no point in spending money twice. Get a clutch and flywheel that you will keep and call it good. Keep in mind that you've got a better selection of clutches in the 1.8 size.

To answer the original question - the stock flywheel can be lightened, but I'm not sure how much. I'm also a bit leery of messing with something that spins at 7000 rpm right by my feet.

I guess part of my thinking was throw in a stock clutch, then at the end of next year I could sell the 1.6 drivetrain, swap in the 1.8 drivetrain (with a fresh clutch) and call it good.

I'm not a fan of doing something like putting a few thousand track miles on a clutch, then swapping it into something else and using the already used stuff vs putting in another new disc/pp......then back to spending money twice.

A stock 1.6 clutch kit is only around $200.
