Here's my situation. I finally got to autocross MY car last weekend, and it was awesome. Won my class, and had a spectacular time.

Thing is, my car is rusting pretty bad in the rockers, and across the rear floorboard. It's not weak or anything, so it's not a huge rush to replace it, but I'm torn about which strategy I should take.

Option 1.) One car to rule them all.

A multipurpose, do all car. I have two kids, so four doors are a must. I've thought about replacing my car with another Sentra, or a stick shift Maxima. I don't drive my car to work, I just need it when I get my two kids on the weekend, and whatever errands I run during the week.

Option 2.) Two is better than one.

Buy a sporty car to race with, and an SUV to haul the kiddos around, and occasionally tow the race car, maybe.

I'm leaning toward number two because my new Ladyfriend, also has two kids, and if the six of us decide to go to the zoo, right now we'd have to take two vehicles. So I'm leaning towards a truck based SUV with three rows.

I'm on a budget, and need to keep things cheap.,total budget of, eh, $5000? Obviously buying two cars within budget will lower the quality of those two cars, vs picking up a nicer late model car to race, and tow my two kids around in.

I'm open to other suggestions, too.

Also, option 3 is to put any race car purchase money into my Camaro and use that as my autocross car.

6=minivan. Pick your poison. Older ones are cheap.

$5k-minivan=old Miata or such. Which is a whole lot of fun.

What's the cost to get your Camaro where you want it vs. buying another autox car? Having two usable vehicles is nice for when one is inevitably down for repairs, but also means ~2x the registration/insurance, and more for maintenance and repairs.

I've gone both ways several times, and there's always drawbacks to either. If you can feel comfortable having $$ tied up into a "toy", that certainly can be a good choice - but that also means less total $$ available for that vehicle, since you'll have at least one other to maintain.

I like the "Autocross the Camaro" option. You could pick up a pretty decent Suburban to tow it with, without spending your whole $5K.

Yeah Brian, I'm with this guy. If you like your camaro, you can keep your camaro. Bodywork isn't that hard if you arent going for show car perfect, and its pretty cheap to do if you have access to a welder. $5k will get a pretty decent suburban/tahoe/yukon. Especially if you haven't convinced yourself that you need 4wd.

I'll third this option, sounds like what the Camaro needs is more time/effort than money. Get a solid dd (I'm in favor of a gmt400 SUV as well) for maybe $3k, spend the leftovers on springs/shocks/sways and you will have a pretty fun car to play with.

No way, the CamaroCare death panel will definitely make him euthanize that dream.
