ALL of the stats about top fuelers are amazing. Their spark is about the same intensity as an arc welder and the spark plug electrode is fully consumed at the 1/2 run point. The rest of the run is done "dieseling" and they can only be shut down by cutting off the fuel supply.

It's also amazing how they can sit at 85 turning barely 2200rpm.
1977 Ferrari 308 GTB -- 8.1 -- 16.8
my 87 mr2 ran a 17.0 in the 1/4... i always knew it was basically a ferrari!

They also say the connecting rods get compacted ~3 thousandths of an inch every trip down the quarter mile, so they basically use them until the become to short...

The old AOD shuffle.
I still can't believe a top fuelie can accept late to 60 within its own wheelbase. That's nuts. And I guess those guys experience more G's than a nasa shuttle? No wonder John force looks young for his age. The guy gets a free face lift every launch.
I keep waiting for someone to bring up the numbers of babies conceived in station wagons/ bench seat trucks vs corvettes or camaros. Those would be some surprising statistics.

I had always heard that the Typhoon/Syclone existed so briefly because they were faster than the Corvette when they launched, not sure if anyone can confirm/deny. May even hold true for the Buick GN and Pontiac T/A- turbo sixes?
Also, the Lexus SC430 was the last vehicle to offer a tape player when it died in 2010.

Not surprising considering the age of the average person buying one. Perhaps they should have installed a turn table in the trunk
I can't even wrap my mind around the top fuel stuff. Mind boggling how fast those things accelerate.
I believe the S2000 was the cheapest hand-built car in production during its lifetime.
Under acceleration the fuel pressure on the INLET side of the fuel pump goes to 60 PSI on a top fuel car.
The Syclone/ Typhoon and Grand National / 88 Trans Am turbo could all be quicker through the 1/4 mile than the Corvette of the same year--- depending on weather. If it was cool --- or very cold like the C&D test of the GN-- the turbo cars made lots of power and would edge the Vette out. (13.9 to 14.1 or so with the GN) The Vette was still faster than all but the Trans Am--- which would reach 150 mph IIRC. The GN's engine is very mod friendly though, and plenty have been made into 1/4 mile monsters. (the Syclone and Typhoon had a different motor than the GN and Trans Am)
I don't think their speed had anything to do with them being cancelled. The Typhoon / Syclone were slow selling novelties--- ahead of their time in the steroid-SUV trend. The GN went away when GM transitioned the Regal to FWD, and the Trans Am was a one-year only anniversary edition.

As entertaining as that is, the i8 has electric torque AND twice the driven wheels. A 10 second youtube search unfortunately did not turn up any vids of that drag race matchup. I did find this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEx8l6B53Pc

It takes 1000 hp to turn a top fuel blower. Which is a 14-71 BTW.
I might be fudging those numbers a bit, car craft had an article about it years ago that's probably online. Mind bending stuff.

Sounds about right - I was quoted something similar for the blower on a Top Alcohol car.
The neat thing was, they screw compressor they replaced it with required a small fraction of the power, and would make 60psi boost (not absolute, boost) instead of just 45psi with tbe blower.
Dont know the displacement, but it was a SBC that was running mid-5s. Well... "SBC". The only things Chevy had to do with it were some, but not all, of the critical dimensions. Solid aluminum engine block, heads that didn't resemble anything GM ever cast, aos so forth.
The mind-boggler was that it had a transmission. He had to shift to get to 250mph in 5.5 sec, it wasn't just reaction time/hang on/hope the clutch engagement was set accurately.
I remember reading in some review back when it was a lot closer to 2005 than now, that the 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 had a faster 50-70 mph acceleration time in top gear. If I remember correctly it beat out some pretty serious cars. Of course those cars didn't have the terrible gear ratios that the Mazdaspeed had. The car is already building some boot at 50mph in 6th gear. I just did a search and cannot find any real evidence to back up my claim though.

A 1998 Corolla with an automatic will return 30 mpg under any and all conditions of beating on it.
It will also suck your soul out faster than it gets to 60.

At least they were decent enough to supply it with a proper hand brake. I've had some fun in that generation Corolla. A new rental fleet Altima...now there is a soul-sucking appliance. Big, low-visibility, soft, CVT, no hand-brake.

That Rav4 was the fastest car Toyota sold, at the time

The average Corvette driver would need to pop a whole bottle of Viagra to even thing about doing such things. And if you're planning to knock someone up in a Camaro that someone had better be a contortionist
