1st the EPA outlaws new production of 2-cycle lawnmowers, now by 2010 catalytics will be required on all small engines?

I agree...or at least landscape with low maintenance ground cover. I don't quite understand the appeal of boring green rectangles.

I'm starting to see great wisdom in it
I have a push mower.. but then the grass part of my yard is only 30 by 20 feet.. the rest is moss and dead dried up pine needles
I have several friends who have "rockscaped" yards... No grass... at all... unless it manages to grow in teh rocks.
I'm planning on landscaping my yard with as little grass as possible. The real issue for me is that I have a fairly sizable back yard, and it would be impracticable to landscape in anything other than the grass that's already there. For that, I tend to let it grow and then mow it down every 3 weeks or so. Less mowing time, less gas used, and the grass spreads better.
If I move away from Florida, I'll probably never have anything resembling a manicured lawn ever again.
My cat must have gotten underneath one of my old leaky cars a while back. It smelled like old oil for a week, and that had a V8. Didn't go there anymore. Oh, wait... Native plants with low watering demands is the way to go. I can see why, but it will just make them more expensive. Four stroke would be an improvement just by itself. I didn't know it was that big of a problem.
Push mower FTW. I've used one for 10 years now. Almost zero maintenance, unfortunately unlike my yard.

One of my parent's goats recently tried to hijack the UPS truck!

Ditto, I dig my reel mower! We have a pretty small yard, so it takes about the same amount of time. Less storage space, lighter, quiet, better cut, etc. It's great. The only downfall is that it doesn't do much for the edges, we go back over those and trim them by hand with some shears every once in a while. We've been thinking about an electric weed eater for the edges, maybe a real hedger.
Personally, I hate that the EPA mandates this stuff, but it's about time they stopped ignoring small engines...passenger vehicles are UBER clean these days and even heavy trucks are very clean (and will be UBER clean come 2010). On road vehicles can't get much cleaner without it costing a ton of money, meanwhile a few minutes cranking with an old chainsaw puts out more emissions than your new car will in thousands and thousands of miles. It was finally becoming too hard to ignore small engines. On-road vehicles have been the EPA whipping boy for a long, long time while the off-road vehicles/engines have been largely ignored. Now that passenger vehicles are to the point of diminishing returns, the EPA needs a new whipping boy. This isn't new news, really, the EPA has been moving in this direction for a long time, just hasn't had much traction in the past.

We have 10 acres, so I'm going to need a really long extension cord. We currently use a gas riding mower for 2 acres and a diesel tractor for the rest. Weed eater, blower, and chainsaw are all two stroke. If we had a small yard I'd be all over one of the electric robot mowers: http://www.friendlyrobotics.com/

Motorcycles (not just sport bikes, all types of bikes) have had catalytic converters for many years.
