You can do better. Passat: not a real "handler", FWD, "heavy". (an earlier golf/jetta/RABBIT would be better, IMHO)
Stanza? This isn't the RWD one, right?
I'm seriously contemplating a '93 525i that I could get for $2-300, only because the price is right and while it's not as desirable as an e36, there is still quite a bit of potential there.
Or there's always the '77 280 Z I have sitting behind my garage
I started work on it as my son's first car but it was going too slow for him so he got a (drum roll please) Miata.
It has the shortened struts, Ground Control adjustable spring perches, GC caster camber plates, a full Energy Suspension bushing set and the body has been sanded smooth.
Oh there's the little issue of it's totally stripped right now but that just makes it easier to build your cage ;)
It's got a good engine, but I am assuming you'd want to put an LS7 in it for the Challenge.
We could work out a price that would be challenge friendly.
Look at past Challange cars that finish near the top, whatever you get needs a V8 and nitrus. the should have come with a 4 cyl, and you swap in something big. go over budget, but the lie about selling things on eBay to recover costs.
That seems to be the winning ticket.
If you want to finish in the money, no.
If you want to have a good time, hang with GRMers and possible get thrown out of a hotel, you bet!
Dan
Passat would make a good parts car for a MKI or MKII vr6 swap. That could possibly be a competitive car.
Pretty sure the GLX was the 172HP V6, though I generally don't know dick about VW's. Not a bad start IMO. I'm guessing you could recoup the $500 pretty easily. A little heavy for my taste, but any port in a storm & all that.

Yep, you're right, 172hp VR6.
Step 1. Find a cheap mk2 Golf
Step 2. Put VR6 drivetrain in Golf (it's pretty much a bolt in deal)
Step 3. Gut the E36 M3 out of it.
Step 4. Sell all the extra crap and get your money back.
Step 5. Flog the crap out of a 2300lb, 172hp car, get in the top ten at the challenge and win the under $1000 trophy.

Aaaaaaaahhh. Gotcha. You forgot the nitrous. 220hp in a 2300lb car sounds like more fun.

If you're not putting at least a 100hp shot on it, what's the point?

Not everyone is into hood-shattering assplosions. Me? Yes. But not everyone.

At LEAST.
We ran an untuned LS-Vtec with stock LS bottom end all last season with a 125 shot on it. Talk about entertaining. Didn't blow up, unfortunately. :(
Frankly, I'm surprised no one has brought a VR6 swapped Golf yet. They're extremely fun, especially when turboed. It's easy when you have a Passat to pull parts from. Do it.
