I'm headed up in the morning to tackle the Dragon once again. https://www.facebook.com/events/1694390994122412/
Looking to join the Two Minute Club; that's 2.2 miles of twisty mountain road in 120 seconds or less. You do the math.
132 second run in 2013, NA 13B and bias ply slicks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5kiuQIEDyA This time I'm running a boosted 13BT and some nice sticky C71 compound Hankook V214's.
Awesome! Car looks well set up. If you got 132 seconds with that setup, you should have no problem getting under 120 seconds with the boosted engine and sticky tires, I think. Great driving!
Thanks! Looking forward to this weekend. At 1:50 in, the launch for the run shown above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRrXgYOQs5g There's all kinds of cool cars in that vid, be sure to look for the McLaren Can Am car at 18:15 in. Yes, it's a real one. No, he wouldn't let me drive it. He did let me drool on it, though. At 19:40 the Jensen comes back down on a rollback, my co driver had a rather nasty off at the halfway spectator point and pranged some front suspension bad enough that it couldn't be repaired in the woods with hand tools. His launch on that ill fated run is at 17:45.
I wish I had time to make the run up there with you.
Do some racers let newbies co-drive their car for the entry fee or do some only let their racing buddies co-drive? Not that I have time to compete this year anyway.
Can you run hillclimb with no safety gear? I'd love to try it. But have nothing caged, no nomex, etc.
I'd suggest contacting the promoters for specifics on necessary safety equipment.
This road has guardrail all the way up, which makes it one of the few that TT novices can run.
You still need a Nomex suit etc, but that gear can be rented or borrowed. Just watch for SFI cert stickers and remember that Snell 2005 helmets 'time out' this year. You'll need Snell 2010 or 2015 after 1/1/15 for TT etc, that doesn't hold true for autocross. A 3 point seat belt is OK in the Street Prepared etc classes, but for my peace of mind I'd like to be in the snug embrace of a 5 or 6 point harness; those can be found as cheap as $89.00.
The good thing is, if you run this event on a novice license and decide to go further such as open track events then having this signed off can be a big step toward that. SCCA and NASA both have a 4 step TT license program, they have finally gotten to where they will accept each other's sign offs. (That's how I got my Level 4 NASA TT license; I had already held a SCCA Level 4.) You can also get your car 'logbooked' at this event, IIRC that's $20.00.
A decent 4 point roll bar is the biggest car mod necessary. The Autopower etc bolt in roll bars are typically pretty reasonable for most cars and honestly building a weld in bar is not much more. I run a full cage, but I also do other silly crap with my car and it also came that way when I got it.

Co drives happen all the time, but the specifics are left between the drivers. It is somewhat cheaper to run as a co driver, it's $160 instead of $250. But you have to pay in advance. You still have to have safety gear, and passengers are not allowed. I think that got relaxed one time when a Lancia rally car was running, the driver and navigator both showed up.
Well... my day did not go so well. Third run this AM the course was pretty damp. I had been through twice with no problems, did the same thing this run but felt the back of the car start to step out to the left. So, I backed off the throttle a teeny bit, and...

Man, I hope it's repairable; I love that old thing. I'm going to drag it into the garage tomorrow and take stock of the damage.
That was a hard hit. Hopefully the car can be rebuilt.
Ouch!! That car must not like that hill.
Glad you're OK.
Aw man, that sucks, I hope you are OK too
damn that sucks, hope its saveable!
What matters is how you're doing.
I hope the car can be fixed too, though. How many other rotary-powered Jensen-Healeys can there be in the world?
Such an awesome machine and venue.
Damn man, that looked rough. At least you are around to let us know about it. Hopefully it will buff out.
That's pretty good if you didn't get any injuries. The car can be replaced if it can't be repaired.
Cool vids. Sorry for the accident. Hope all is well.
So, how hard was it to get out of the bed this morning. That looked like a 4 ibuprofen thump to me.
I'll see if I can dig up that sub-frame today.
sorry about the crash - really shows the need for proper safety equipment. And on video #1 I kept focusing on those post it notes and why they didn't fly away.....
Wow things went wrong so fast in that video it didn't look like there was anything that could be done there. Hope you're alright and sorry about the car :(
Glad you're OK! Don't forget to get new harnesses. They are one time use only! Also HANS tethers if you're using one.
Cars can be fixed. You'll be back in no time!
Hell that was a hard hit. Before you get back in the garage, get a massage first. Damn son.
