i keep coming back to this wondering if an LS swap is feasible or stupid.
it's a sexy, sexy car, but good engines on car-part are $$$$.
i am not going to go look as i would probably buy and i do not need more project, but it's on the table for future consideration if these cars are going to be all over the place cheap.
lots of people have lsx swapped 5ers, Id guess the 7s are easy too.
I'd also guess if the engine hasn't been maintained, neither have any other expensive systems, like the suspension, electronics, HVAC, brakes, etc.

i think if you were willing to forgo the electric things or make retrofit of more common {hvac etc}. it could work very well.
One way or another, there is no such thing as a cheap 7 series.
The early 7's wouldn't be bad since their electronics are more conpartmentalized and figured out, rather than the later ones.
Then again ones with good motors aren't exactly expensive either. I've got a 740iL in new black paint that I need to move soon after I finish the suspension refresh (including lowering springs and getting the rear shocks working again). Probably worth $3k here in the PNW. Come fly and drive it home.
I should say the V8 is a great motor. Quad cam v8 that revs to 7k from the factory can't be all bad. Its usually the transmissions and other bits that fail that cause them to hit the market cheap (that and the 6'es are a bit small for a car that big and the 12's are stupid expensive to repair).

I agree, working E38's aren't expensive enough to make buying a broken one worthwhile. I was looking only at SWB Sport Package models (sporty shorties) and you can still pick them up for $4-$5k. The regular 740's and iL's are even cheaper.
I came to my senses and got a Lexus LS, but I still think E38's are super cool. James Bond and Frank Martin approve.
I got a complete replacement engine for my E38 for $400, plus $200 in shipping. Too much effort to swap an LSx into one.
These cars are actually pretty easy and cheap to keep running, so might was well start with one that has a running engine in it already.
And good shorty sporties are still going for $10k or more. Only crap ones are down under $5-6k.
M62 engine go for $500 to $1500 around here. If the car is immaculate then yeah buy it. But, if it needs more than a new motor then nah.
