I saw this on another forum:
That's not cheap. With a blown engine, it's worth about $1000. He probably wouldn't take that amount.

Actually, he's about on the money. Body kit is worth $500-1000 depending on buyer, same for the unique interior, OE wheels are worth about $700 bare (and he has PS2's on them), 6-speed tranny is worth about $1000...slicktops are UBER RARE as well. $4500 isn't a bad asking price, I'd offer $3k and happily meet in the middle.

I'll just leave this here

I am going to second the "That's not cheap" sentiment. Even with its rarity/parts, you shouldn't give more than $2500. That way in the worst case scenario, you could part it out and make about $500-1000 for your hard work of parting it. BMW people are notoriously bad at grasping this concept. Thankfully the guy I bought my e36 from was a realist and not a dipE36 M3.

Like Slick, I'd be happy with a price between a lowball and his ask. The ZHP is rare enough to command a premium, and the upside is huge. That's the closest you will get to a 4dr E46 M3 . . .
To each their own, I guess. I parted out a smashed E28 for about $4500, maybe I'm insane but this thing looks like a decent deal to me...
Count me as one of the dips that sees the value in that car. While ZHPs are ridiculously priced compared to M3s, that's the market value. Fixed, this is a $10-11k car. That makes it worth a $1000 longblock and a weekend to a lot of people. For $3k or so, it's a bargain.
Agreed with the market value of the car but would still show up at his house with a trailer and $1500. This is on my list of good daily rides and it's close to home...
While I don't think it's cheap, it's not a terrible price. ZHPs command a premium, and that's probably a $9k-$10k car after the needed repairs. Even if the engine is totally shot, you can find them used for around $1,500, so doing the work yourself you'd have right at $6k if you paid asking price. BTW, this car is listed on the E46fanatics forums for $3,500.

You'll need more than a longblock, the cams are FUBAR and the head probably is as well. Plus while the engine is out, you should do a new flywheel or resurface it, plus a new OE clutch. So figure even more money. I stand behind my sentiment of offering $2500 tops.
In reply to yamaha:
Doesn't a "long block" typically denote an included top end, or am I just on another planet today?
I sent it on to a friend that does this sort of thing all the time and moves them on his used lot. It would be a great answer to my daily issue but I need a little more time to forget my current Bimmer woes before bringing another home...

Actually, you're right. I went nutters for a minute and was thinking block + rotating assembly. I would instantly want a used BMW head inspected for cracks/skimmed and then a new head gasket installed though.
I'm thinking the Long Block will be a little more than $1000. They are thin on the ground for the ZHP version and I see them used for $1500-$1800.
Sure, you can get the regular motor and swap that in but then what's really the point of the ZHP? I see the market value unless you get a rebuilt long block at about $8000. Can you make some money on it sure. I wouldn't call it cheap though.
I was never sold on the ZHP as much better than a 330 anyway and I like a sunroof in a car that I'm not cutting up to put a cage in. The 330 didn't need a six speed. The body kit is barely noticeable and the mild bump in power could easily be dwarfed by putting a 3.64 LSD in a normal 330. I would have put different springs/dampers/sways on it anyway.
I get people do care... I'm just not one of them. $2500 is top dollar for my wallet.
Someone on this board mentioned that a non-running car is worth $500, which is reasonable since problems can escalate.
In reply to Mr_Clutch42:
That's what I paid for my 318ti......with about $7-8k of quality aftermarket parts on it.
In reply to Mr_Clutch42:
I have maintained for a while that I would be hard pressed to pay more than $500 for a non - running car. Sure this a somewhat rare BMW but where will you find a used engine? What else may be wrong. If it's so valuable why doesn't the owner fix it?
