Anyone have input? I'm aware that reception will probably not be as good as stock, but i'm not really concerned with that. I live in a major metro area. As long as i can pull in my morning show, i'm good. Beyond that, i have a phone to plug in.
Buddy wants my power antenna setup, and i'm all for removing moving parts off my car.
But i'm not excited about paying $50 for this: http://www.mossmiata.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=101769
I would say s2k antenna just because I own one, but the reception isn't the greatest.
We used to put those on Celicas. Wonder if they work on Miatas easily.
How many dukets are they?

$14 for a short, but slightly longer then near worthless stubby, setup
Any idea how long that one is? S2000 seems to be about 7". 6-10" is the range i want to play in if i can make arbitrary demands based on silly things such as looks.
I put one of those stubby ones on my Miata when the power one died. It was damn near useless as an antenna, but then again I'm a good 30+ miles away from most of the stations I listen to. I wouldn't buy another, in any case.
What's the frequency of the radio station you like?

Looks like the same one I bought yesterday for the Miata I don't technically own yet. $8 on Amazon, 16".

Too long. I can dig around amazon some more, though.
This is what i'm looking for. Ish.
But without having to spend $40-$50.

Your Miata has a radio?
A Bose radio, in fact. I'm throwing a mechless headunit in it, though.
I purchased the stubby for my Z4 through an outfit called www.mangowalk.com. Lot's of Z4 guys have picked up theirs through them.
I believe they meet your price point.
Edit PS-- hard to say how well it works though-- Z4 only uses the external antenna for AM, and who listens to that?
I'm looking for an electrically short antenna like a rubber ducky. The problem I keep running into is funky looking mounting hardware that I think is worse looking than a slightly taller antenna. Like this thing;
http://www.iboats.com/Am-Fm-Universal-Antenna-Anderson-Marine/dm/cart_id.573519744--session_id.044672793--view_id.1183972
There's also this thing; http://www.amazon.com/Metra-44-UA20-Amplified-Hide-Away-Antenna/dp/B000B9E3QM
The problem then is what you do with the old antenna mount on the outside of the car. I also don't know personally how well this thing works, but I did buy one! Just never got around to installing...
$15 shipped definitely meets my price point, and the look is good enough.
I need to look into how i would mount that. Some of the other super cheesy Ebay options (CARBON FIBER ALL THE THINGS) look like they would just screw into the factory non-power base i'm getting in trade for my power setup.
I have one of those hide-away deals on the MX6. Haven't tested it yet, but i'm sure it works well enough for my purposes.
Problem is that the MX6 is easy to "shave" the antenna and have it look fine. (Just plugged the base with silicone, it looks fine.)
Miata... not so much. Just leaves a hole in the rear quarter.

Way too long. I'm not into the whole size queen thing.
In reply to Swank Force One:
Take non-power base plate and a drill and a Dremel to remove the antenna part of the base and use it like a mount for new antenna? Never really looked at the part but it makes sense in my imagination.

Possibly. I'd be lying if i said i even had the foggiest idea what the non-power setup looks like, though.

I had the moss motors one. It was a powered unit and it worked fine for me. YMMV

I'm sure it works just fine, Chris wouldn't sell me garbage. I'm just not paying $50 for an antenna mast.

Well get a cell phone with an FM receiver and a head unit with a 3.5mm input jack. Now you have an antenna.

Arrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggg.
The stock BMW Z3 antenna works quite well, but it's over $50 by the time you get it all together
