1 is the new epa rating system. it seams to be an across the board 5 mpg hit on small cars.
I don't really understand this. Even beating the piss out of older cars I tend to get better then EPA's older rating system. So I don't really get it? Why does the EPA keep making the mpg of new cars rated worse, when you don't even really have to try to beat it?
It's like grade inflation of the fuel economy curve. The masses were tired of getting D's (i.e., not getting near the EPA numbers), so they changed the curve so even the most lead-footed dimwit can get a B+ (i.e., somewhere near the EPA number).
I say we let the consumer decide if they want saftey equipment or not.
Make certain features required in some states and not in others, sort of like the motorcycle helmet law, or drivers age law, or seatbelt law.

What was the Pontiac version of the Chevette? The T-1000?
It's back
The Acadian (at least in Canada :)). We used to get many different rebadged Pontiacs, such as the Tempest -- really a Corsica and a version of the second last B chassis as the Parisienne.
I could go without 20 airbags in a car. I survived a hit by a semi going 70mph without wearing a seatbelt or airbags going off. It was most likely a stroke of luck, the grace of god, or my guardian angel watching over me, but I still don't feel the need for 10 frontal side impact airbags. I have a Homer Simpson skull so I'm good.
I've been averaging about 37 mixed in the Fit with the MT. The Aveo we rented while on vacation got in the neighborhood of 28 or 29 with the slushbox. Plus it hurt my spine. No, I don't think a Pontiac version is the answer. Maybe if they added a turbo...

Pre-airbag cars, to my knowledge, are not illegal to purchase.
Yet, anyway.

"Let's take a not-so-great car and make another one." This is the same type of innovative thinking that GM has been employing for the past 30 years. You know, the same kind that has them today on the brink of bankruptcy.
This is annoyingly reminiscient of the #1 car on this list:
