Time for some of you to put your money where your mouth is! Seems to beat the Jetta in every category except one... Station wagon. But they do have one overseas, and it could be a possibility.

Well there is the whole 'no manual' thing too...

I'll believe it, when I see it.
I'm sure it will be one of those cars that you can buy in theory, but that when you go shopping for one, no dealer will have one. And I don't buy cars without testing them. And the salesman will try in every way possible to push you into a Cruze Eco they have on the lot, etc..

Not a hatch or wagon so hard to get too interested.
Wish it were a wagon or hatch, I could maybe convince the wife to replace her Fit with one if that were the case. Even the auto-only wouldn't be a big deal, but a sedan is a tough sell in this house.
At $25k, it's a big premium to pay for a motor with unknown reliability.
Still waiting for the diesel Mazda6 wagon...

If they had a hatch or wagon, I'd be fine with the 1.4t gas motor. As it is I'm not even considering such a car, and I am flirting with the idea of trading in the rot box I currently DD on new for the financing and warranty. Hyundai Elantra or the upcoming Mazda3 are probably top choices right now instead.
I was wanting to look at the 2014 Mazda 6 with the diesel, still waiting! The wagon would be the one, but its not for the USA. The Chevy Cruze is in stock with diesel.

Are you serious? I've test driven two. They seem find but no manual transmission so ill keep my tdi thanks.
Also they don't beat the tdi in MPG. The EPA inflates the Chevy's numbers and make the vws lower. I regularly hit 50 MPG hwy yet the.EPA says 42. The.Chevy is rated at 46
hwy and I haven't seen over 43 on long hwy test drives. (20 miles).

I bought a ECO Cruze a few months ago. We thought about waiting for the diesel yet we get great mileage with the ECO. About 36 in town and 44 on the highway. Love the car and it is much more sophisticated than my 86 Bronco 2:-)

Not to mention if I pay the premium for a new car I want it to actually be BETTER than my old one. Since my Jetta TDI cost me 6k and still beats the mpg of the cruze diesel and has a stick the cruze diesel would need to have the other features I want like a nicer interior and newer doodads. The Mazda6 has those so I am still waiting to see what happens with their diesel variant
Is it just my skewed perspective because they're what I want, or do wagons make up the largest group of VW TDIs? If it's not just me, why are Chevy and Mazda giving it a miss, especially when they already have that body style elsewhere?
It must be me...

So, what you're saying is, a well broken in motor gets better gas mileage than a brand new motor? Who knew...

Uh no I'm not saying that. I got 51 MPG on the drive home from the dealer in my VW with 13 miles on it. It has better gearing and better final drive so it turned better numbers. New to new. Apples to apples. I've driven both. Have you?
So you come to hype up a G.M. product on a board which has been proven time and time again to hate on anything G.M.?
I heart G.M. and have always been a fanboy and knowing this board people will find any excuse in the book to badmouth it.
I was just telling the wife today how I wish we had bought a cruze instead of the elantra. She loves the Hyundia though.

I hope you don't think I am bad mouthing GM because in my opinion the tdi is better. I love some GM products and have owned very many of them however in this case I feel the tdi wins. Better economy. Better price tag for the options. (I paid 21k for mine new) and three berkeleying pedals like God intended. Less money more MPG and manual trans. What's not to get?

I hope GM is smart enough to put that in the ad's.
I thought I always wanted a diesel but for a couple years now diesel has been almost.$.60 a gal more than gas. Between that had the higher initial cost I don't know that it would ever pay for itself even considering that I usually wring 300k from a car.

I am not anti GM either. But when I went to the car show NY auto show and sat in all the chevy options the interior layouts felt low quality. Something was off about the design and materials. A lot of hard touched plastics, and what felt like overstuffed cushions. At least the Chevy options. The Cadillac seemed better.
I once read that the TDI uptake was something over 50% on new Jetta Wagons
They're not going to give a GM product a break . Most car snobs won't.
If I were in the market, I'd sure give it a look.

So, just to recap, you're getting your fuel economy numbers from the dash gauge, not actually tracking how many gallons you put in vs. miles driven?

Not intended toward you or anyone in particular. Just an observation of how this board normally operates. The TDI is the go to standard in this field IMHO. But without a doubt I would choose the Chevy.

Diesel is about 118% the price of gas here. The Diesel Cruze gets about 118% the mileage of the ECO. Meaning, it would never pay for itself.

I think we (socal or west coast) pay more for gas than you guys do in general but diesel has been the same price or cheaper than regular for the past close to 6 months. It's like 4.05 and regular is 4.07 a gallon.
I don't think its a pure numbers equation though because how much would you pay for the convenience of filling up approx 20% less often?
Not sure what your ECO gets but because I don't need the evaporative stuff on the fuel tank with diesel I can put 2 more gallons in my tank and get 14-15ish gallons into the jetta and a "I am not driving for fuel economy" tank lasts me about 630-645 miles
I hope it succeeds, I think we need more diesel in the US in passenger cars. I would not choose the cruze simply because I didn't like the interior when I looked at it at NYAS not because of GM or any other reason. Now the Mazda6 Diesel I am waiting to see if they have it available with a manual and if I can go test drive one

our TT director and his wife got one of the ECO 6sp. early this yr ... he says mid-40's all day long and he's hit 50 on a trip .... really don't thing he's a hyper-miler either
it'll be one I look at next yr when I replace the Integra
NOTICE: Not a hate on GM post
Please remember the horrible gas to diesel V8 conversion from GM is one of the reasons diesels are 30 years behind in this country.
The Cruze looks good, but as said here already, tactile impressions are of low quality. It is an economy car after all. VW is known for having some of the nicest interiors in its class but I know the are moving them down stream to get a price break and the interior and rear suspension is what they are cutting to be competitive in the NA market.
The TDi has a rep for reliability, and exceeding fuel economy numbers by 25% or more, (I don't know of anyone who hasn't consistently beaten EPA numbers on a VAG diesel. Most are getting highway ratings in town.) The Cruze is the new kid on the block from a company that isn't viewed by the public positively and is viewed by many as the destroyer of diesel.
I think it is great GM put it out but for my new car dollar I would stick with the VW.
As far as GM haters, I thought the C5 was the greatest vehicle built in the last twenty years on here and Volt was the only "GM Hated" car?
