It is a poor practice unless the goal is to encourage more bad behavior in the future - for that reason I will not be buying a GM or Dodge product. If you don't like the Fiesta, how about a Focus?

What about the billions in DOE loans Ford took that GM didn't? To do what, build a crappy all electric Focus.

You will after some minor mods net you double the power of the cars you mentioned. I think it's an ugly 4 door, so I wouldn't buy one, but as a cheap car guy I see serious upside. I don't see any with the cars you mentioned.

I have heard nothing but raving about the handling of the Fiesta and Mazda 2 but the Sonic has been fairly mixed. I think it is better then some of the new small cars out right now but it certainly isn't the best.

For as much as I hated my late '80s Cavalier, it never gave me any issues. Drove that thing to hell and back, treated it like garbage (because in my head it basically was), but it always did what it was asked without complaint.

That's better than I can say of pretty much any other car I've ever owned.

Who wants a slow, ugly 4 door hatchback that handles well? Not me.

Only heard good things about the handling of the Sonic, and great things about the power.

So after years of producing mediocre (if reliable) appliances, GM finally gives us the small, efficient, fun, entry-level car we have been asking for.

and people bitch and moan.

tough crowd

As I said, I'm looking forward to driving the 1.4 turbo manual trans Sonic. Judging by how well the 1.8 auto performed, the turbo should be in the running for best in class.

It is more powerful than it's competition, but also heavier. It is better looking than any of it's competition (to me- at least in hatch form), and it's ride quality / handling should be comparable to the class's top contenders.

I would rather have one that handled well and was slow then one with a lot of power that had ok handling. The Sonic is a huge jump foward by GM and I am looking forward to there next attempt at a small car (the Spark which is smaller but I am really wanting to try it out) and the Sonic is probably one of the best cars in that class minus the 2 or Fiesta but it just seems really forgettable.

They had it before (Chevy Sprint/Firefly) and nobody bought them. People just like to bitch

The Fiesta/2 are just appliances like a Fit.

The Sonic is mind-bogglingly fast, handles insanely well, is dead nuts reliable, has the fantastic, solid interior bits the General is renowned for, and is a STEAL at whatever price they're asking for it. The Fit is a mind-numbingly boring appliance, especially in a four wheel drift at 50mph getting off the hwy on the way to the house. Handles like the berkeleying queen mary, and will only be worth $2k 10 years from now, as it'll basically be a parts car. That 2800 lb, 140hp Chevy however? WHOOOO MAN! What a rocket!!!

Everybody happy?

The absolute best version of the Cruze (minus the WTC car) is the Buick Verano. Very tight and smooth.Torquey. Quiet. Excellent steering and brakers. The base model Cruze always left me cold UNTIL last week. I sold a base 1.8 car in black granite with the manual transmission. The car is absolutely transformed with the manual. So for now its an LS 1.4T car with manual and selected goodies like heated seats, Bluetooth and Pioneer sound system. I could so live with that until the Diesel comes out next year.

I agree. The manual, even if the clutch is lame and soft and the shifter has the precision of a hot knife in warm butter, makes the car driveable. The automatic just sucks. There isn't just one reason why it sucks either, it just plain sucks.
