I have been having an intermintant problem with my DD 92 Civic DX and this being my first Honda I thought I would ask the experts.

Every so often the speedo will start to act crazy, then the car starts to stumble and will eventually shut down. So far I have been able to get it restarted again but it has me worried.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I had a '92 CX that did nearly the same thing, (it never got to the point where it shutdown). If I remember right, it's the main relay.

There was a similar problem posted here recently. When my main relay "went", because I didn't know what it was/where it was, I took it to my "honest" mechanic. The fix was $300. Reading the topic/thread on here, made me believe I paid about $250 too much....versus fixing it myself. I no longer have that car, or I would tell you where the relay in question is. Look on the various boards here, tho, you should find it.

Okay, I just went looking for the thread/posts on this Civic problem I thought I saw here....I guess my "meds" are wearing off. I can't find it here, so maybe I saw it on www.Honda-Acura.net. Either way, try that website for help. You have to register to post a question, but most of the info is available without registering....unlike other websites on the 'net.

I guess I should take my own advice and also stop posting when I don't know for sure what I'm talking about. A look at Honda-Acura.net makes we wonder if you don't have a VSS problem. It seems, from what I'm reading there, that if you have the symtoms you have already described AND you are getting a check engine light of some kind....there is a very good chance it is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor).

IF I had all my old receipts from my CX I could look at what was done to fix a SIMILAR problem. ( I dump all my paperwork when I trade cars.)

Go to H-A.net and search under the forum topics for help with this problem.

Classic speed sensor gone bad.

For some reason, hondas of this era are PLAGUED with it.

It gets really interesting when you have a boosted one with a speed sensor that randomly stops work, and you hit launch control cruising on the highway in 5th gear.

Just grab another one from a junkyard, any D-series one will work, make sure you have enough pigtail on it to splice, and have at it.

Thanks for all of the help, I know what I will be doing this weekend.

I had sort of the same problem on my 93 Civic Si mostly during hot weather. Found out it was the main relay. The solder tends to wear from normal wear and tear/vibrations.

They are easy to fix (don't remember the price of them though). Mine was located near the fuse box in the driver's side foot well. Getting to it took some contorting, but once that was fixed all my problems went away.
