I'm picking the Datsun up sunday come hell or high water, and I'm having a little trouble tryign to decide on a class spec to build it to.
I want to eventually run it with the thscc, and I've seen they have time trials for cars built to SOLO class specs (I was thinking SM probably), but I'm not entirely sure what class or sanctioning body I want to build to.
Its a 75 280z coupe.
I will eventually be running coilovers but it comes with some lowering springs that I can run if I trim the bump stops.
I'll be running the l28 flat top block with an e31 head (240z) with carbs (starting with the flat SU's that are on there now, maybe 3x webers in the future.
It will be completely stripped inside, I plan on making a very simple replacement dash to fit the digi dash in, plus buttons/switches/etc
I have an idea to run buttons on either side of the wheel for signals/lights/horn so I don't have to have a stalk but can still be barely street legal, because I would like to drive it around every once in a while, and drive it to events.
NC safety inspection (which is all it will need) requires a horn, wipers, lights, and for everything to be in ok working order basically
I want to seam weld then spray the entire chassis/interior/body the same color and run a bolt in cage (or weld in if bolt in doesn't meet regs)
I have seats lined up, will be running 5 or 6 points.
May add door bars too
So basically, A street legal car that I can get into auto-x and HPDE's with, and something to really just go all out on.
any recommendations for a class to build to that I can run with in the NC/SC/VA area?

From what you're describing, it'll end up in a Prepared class. Even then, some of your modifications may put you into Modified.
No gutted interiors in Street Mod.
I'd look at the NASA website, from my VERY LIMITED experience they are much more open about classing, and you are more likely to be competitive/have fun. The real key though would be to go look at the other entrants and pick a class that has good participation near you. It's not much fun to get your heart set on "super street double modified" class and then show up and have only 1 other car in it. it looks like you'd be base classed in ttf over there.
Sounds like A) It probably won't be competitive in whatever class it falls into on a non-local level and B) On a local level there probably won't be any competition.
In light of the above, I say: Build it how you want and just enjoy it.

this is what I'm planning, its mainly to just build a track car, but it'd be nice to build it to a certain set of regs so I can compete eventually with it. I'll do some more research, still have a long way to go on the car.
Honestly, I'd build it to Vintage Racing for the track, since you're going to track it anyways.

I would agree with this. If nothing else, when building for a class, the changes and mods can be more focused, rather than potentially haphazard.
Otherwise, I can offer my experience from running a Spit 6 in Super Street Mod: While driving a woefully under-prepped car is still fun, it eventually becomes extremely frustrating if you have an even moderately competitive streak.
Of course, I say this as I sit here debating on registering for the DC Pro in April, where my E30 will be very uncompetitive in STX - partly due to being an under-dog car with a budget prep and mostly due to a lack of driver skill/experience.
okay anyone here have experience running with a Vintage Class in these here carolinas? I live in hickory right now but will be moving to charlotte asap so CMP will not be out of reach, and VIR will just be a few hours.
Anyone able to recommend a particular vintage racing club around here that I can have some fun with and cut my teeth in on-track racing that isn't in a kart?
thank you all for the responses so far, I'm very excited to pick the car up

Go for it. But hurry up since it is already at 211 registered.
