How do you guys split cost with a co-driver? I have been letting a friend co drive my miata for quite a while at autocross events. Now that I am using much better tires (RC-1s) and have put more money into the car I feel like I need to expect them pitch in something.
If it were me I would definitely throw some bucks at you for fuel and tires etc. Spring for lunch and whatnot. You know. Treat you right
I think the good intentions are there but there's always the issue of having cash/the opportunity/thinking about it on the day of etc.
Make sure you have some sort of agreement on if he wrecks the car or damages it. See my build thread if you need more insight
Years ago ,a friend and I used my car for the Ontario Region solo series. I supplied the car and he supplied the tires. We each paid our own entry fees. He got as many runs in a day as I did. Any car damage due to autocrossing was my problem, damage due to hitting anything was his. Nothing happened, so we never tested the agreement.
I would charge him a share of consumables. So say the tires cost $800 and you expect them to last 100 runs, charge him $8 per run. Anything that breaks at an event due to race loads, you split the cost on. IE if either of you snap an axle, you split that. If the thermostat goes, I woudn't call that "racing related" and you would pay for that.

I had the same arrangement and it worked well. A couple of sets of fresh slicks every year made a high-strung but outclassed car run very close to and occasionally beat a state-of-the art competitor. When mechanical bad things happened, it wasn't because of who was driving.
I would say splitting the fuel plus a few bucks (somewhere in the $20-$50 area) for wear and tear/maintenance would be about right. Split most failures (including labor), cover your own definitely driver induced damages (e.g. a money shift or a crash) though.
