I need your thoughts
raining like heck here (started last night) just as I was starting the oil change on the CRX... no garage... so I left it to drain figuring I'd finish this morning/today... it's still pouring... I said to heck with it.. put the plug back in, poured 4 qts of Amsoil in and backed it off the ramps , got back inside... as I dried off realized I hadn't checked underneath for leaks nor checked the dipstick for full
so back out I go, ... no leaks, but the dipstick showed about a half inch too full (remember I didn't change the filter... only ~ 1500 miles on the oil & filter) (I've a track day next wk) I also have an a-x tomorrow .... I know too much oil is bad but how much is too much ?
before everyone flames me I know I A: should have changed the filter.. I was already wet, how much wetter was I going to get..
and B: I didn't look up in the book before I poured in the oil... so I have ~ 2/3's to much oil...
That much extra oil is waaay too much to go and flog the engine like that. In my opinion anyway. You just poured 4 quarts in there? What kind of engine do you have? I've never worked on a Honda 4 cylinder. that needed more than like 3.6/3.8
Then again, I don't have much experience with B or K series.
D16... with filter 4 works fine... my bad when I decided to wimp out and not change the filter
3 1/2 then add for filter ... so I'm at least a half qt over.... I guess I'll have to either let some out (damned messy) or go ahead and change the filter like I should have anyway..
darn I hate working under a car in the rain
Interesting. I didn't know the filter made that big of a difference. Maybe I've been using more oil than I thought during my oil changes. I always just go by the dipstick so I don't really measure it.
it really doesn't add that much, just that with what it takes up the, extra half qt really doesn't seem to matter
won't stop raining 'til about 6 tonight
Those D series have a really annoying filter location too. Good luck.
Half a quart or half an inch on the dipstick? Half a quart's not bad. Half an inch is probably at least a quart over.
Can you siphon some out through the dipstick filler tube -- maybe with a turkey baster and a clear plastic line (8 mm or bigger)?
been a hell of a day.... 2 yellow jacket stings, stupidly over fill the crankcase... finally said berkley it... drained the EXPENSIVE oil out ... went to put the drain plug back in and finally figured out why it had been so hard to remove/replace/remove last night/today... the threads were so buggered up it no go... off to the parts store .. at least they had one (+got the "oversized" one for this car... just in case) back home .. in the rain, finally with rain dripping and splashing everywhere I got it back together.. all ready for tomorrow and VIR next week....
damn I hate doing dumb things
thanks everyone
good call on draining it and making sure you had the right amount. i would be just ass pissed and frustrated in your shoes, but its always good to take every precaution.
Dunno about your motor, but when I had the oil pan off of our LeMons '86 Civic, I stuck the dipstick back in and eyeballed the position relative to the pickup. At 1 liter low, the oil level is only about 1/4" above the screen for the pump. Uh, no. Not a good thing in high G cornering. We ran Wal Mart Super Tech 20w50 at about 1/2 quart overfull and the motor never missed a beat.

I hope you were able to reuse most of it?
