Well... after this:

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/200x-classifieds/wtb-turbo-stuff/20185/page1/

We're making progress.

Doesn't look like much, but i'm at the point where only a few things need to be done:

1) attach 4 nuts to the bolts on the wastegate
2) New oil filter
3) oil/coolant
4) Finish intercooler piping (waiting on two reducers)
5) Prime it then start it

Here's some pictures with some peanut gallery commentary.

Rice!!!!

Some of my pipes/clamps/couplers. I do NOT recommend www.cxracing.com.

Ah hah... now we start to realize why this thing has a rebuilt title. WTF kind of fix is THAT?

Some more crash damage.

I didn't remove that bumper support. It simply wasn't there.

The ugly lump i'm working with.

The exhaust setup/wastegate dump.

Repping GRM of course!

Mmmmmm wastegate.

Cute little tarblow.

I feel like my control arms may be pointing the wrong way.

I wasn't expecting the suspension setup to drop the car this low.

Only three fingers off the ground, and my crossmembers scrape everywhere. Now i know how the VW crowd feels.

It should have a factory "TURBO" badge where the Grassroot's sticker is...

You're making miss my old 626. Well, except for the transmission problems I had. I wonder if there's some beefing that can be done by a good rebuild shop (and not the shops I had rebuild my trans).

It's completely debadged now, which is pretty amusing, because apparently 99.9% of the world's population has no idea what it even is...

The transmission problems are solved these days via a Toyota E153 transmission swap.

And how involved is an E153 swap?

My Civic once had flaps like that.

After the first event on Hoosiers, the edges were beveled quite nicely. Always remember that the smell and sound is only temporary.

It's involved, but nothing that's out of even my reach, and i'm pretty bad at this. The only major custom piece is an adapter plate, and there's a few people now that have templates for one. There's a fairly large group of people in the Escort/Protege community that are doing this now. Enough to have a group buy on some of the parts. Search E153 on clubprotege if you feel like it, and you'll see a bunch of posts buy a guy named "therieldeal." He's done it on his Escort. It's pretty much the same thing for my car, just slight differences on the shift linkage and axles.

That all said... the H-series transmission in the F2T cars is fairly strong if not abused. Mine has 172k miles on it, and shifts great besides the bushings being shot. No grinds, no fuss, no nothing. And i'm making SIGNIFICANT amounts of power more than stock, to horrifically understate the situation. The only guys that i know that have done the E153 swap on the GD chassis are overseas, and running ridiculously powerful FE3 Turbo swaps.

I love the feeling of a car coming back together. I put a few parts ON my Supra today, and got some wiring niggles taken care of. I felt so accomplished.

Keep it up, looks like fun.

She fired today. Motor sounds great, no ticks. No major leaks. (Minor oil leak around the sandwich plate behind the oil filter, replacing that anyways soon.) Pulling 19inches of vaccuum at idle just like it should. Fan works, ALL lights work finally, and she spools like a banshee even just free-revving in neutral. The sound of the turbo is deafening.

Problem: Surging idle between 1500 and 1800rpms. Cycles about once every second and a half. It didn't do this before i tore it down. Seems to be pulling the right vaccuum, so i don't imagine it's a vaccuum leak, or i could be wrong.

Pulling the VAF plug results in a rock solid 1500rpm idle, but a check engine light as it should, dumping it into limp mode.

Halp?

It looks like you are making excellent progress putting things back together, great work. I'm impressed with your ability to replace all those missing parts quickly and cheaply. I'm glad that you were able to pull things together after a minor tragedy and am looking forward to seeing the car in person.

good luck tb

Thanks TB i appreciate it.

Random musing: Am i right in ASSuming that since the vaccuum gauge is reading normal vaccuum levels, that i probably don't have a vaccuum leak, and that the issue is likely electronic based? (IACV, TPS, bad fuel pump?)

What about bad gas? The tank was almost empty 8 months ago, and it's still the same gas. Would that cause a surging idle maybe? The car is NOT misfiring, however.

I want to see some smoking front tires... (just put some crappy skinnies on there and light them up )

IIRC, the bouncing high idle in my MR2 was caused by an air pocket in the cooling system. The CTS wasn't getting a consistent reading and was trying to compensate (intermittently) with raising the idle even more.

It's got 205 width Nexens on it already... i don't need to put anything different on it to burn through 3rd gear.

That's very possible. The cooling system capacity is just under 2 gallons on this car, and i've got somewhat less than a gallon and a half in it right now.

Call me stupid, but i have no idea how to burp a system, though. Tips, tricks, walkthrough? I'll test this by disconnecting the sensors on the waterneck and see what that gets me.

Lookin' good! I love a rock-solid, simple engine that you can just boost to the moon.

What sort of 1/4 mile times are you expecting? Assuming you can get traction .

I'll be happy to break into 12s on the current setup. It's more than got the power, but i'm pretty traction limited. The time in my signature was due to a boost controller malfunction and the car hitting 22psi. I bet i would get a faster time, but a slower trap speed if i could get it to just hang at 16psi. (Shouldn't be a problem)

Still stock ECU. Simple doesn't begin to describe this engine. 7.8:1 compression, SOHC, 12v, cast block, forged crank, forged rods, hyperpeutic pistons. It's really just the B2200 truck motor with 4 more valves. It's the proverbial brick E36 M3house. It ain't pretty, but it'll take a bomb or two. It's about as advanced, and as strong as the Turbo Mopar motor Pat is using. Possibly stronger. Nobody really knows the limits of it. Most of the lunched motors are a result of tuning issues. The rest of the car isn't so simple.

There's an excellent change of Megasquirt and a bigger turbo in my future, though.

You win the prize. +5 internets to your account.

I filled/burped the system, and put 2 gallons of fresh 93 octane in it. She fired up, warmed up, and settled down to the normal 800rpm burbly popping idle.

Drove it today. Holy E36 M3.

It's not quick. It's "omfg where's the exit" fast.

Part of that due to a boost issue. It won't stop climbing. I have to figure that out.

The bad news? The radiator is likely trashed. Easy job, though.

Question: I've got a pretty nasty front end noise.

Only seems to happen when i'm turning the steering wheel. It'll happen on the ground, it'll happen in the air. It'll happen if i've got the car in the air and i grab one of the wheels and turn it. I can see the strut catching in conjunction with the pops.

Strut mounts the likely culprit here?

Bad bearings in the mounts? Sounds right.
