If venturing into new cars, a Cruze eco will get 40+ for much less than a Volt or Purius.
Anything GM with the 3800 V6 will get 30 on the hwy and be cheap and comfy. (if you're willing go go that way again after the Grand Prix) A Lesabre may be softer sprung and more gently used. Lucerne 3800 or 3900 is a good choice too, but the "fun" part may be lacking.
