OK. So... I got a plasma cutter on the super cheap. I was leafing thru the tattered manual and it says:
"USE A HIGH QUALITY AIR DRYER WITH THIS UNIT"
Considering a poor quality air dryer is about $400 ... do I really?

Rule of thumb, yes.
How big is the compressor, will it be running often to meet the demands of the plasma cutter?
This is going to sound crazy, but I've had massive success with Harbor Freight's little dryer. Humid summers in Atlanta mean 90F with 95% humidity. I was getting so much water in the lines that even with 100' of line and an Ingersoll-Rand separator at the end wasn't enough (it filled up the separator with about 10 minutes of spraying, too). Got this guy on sale, it's been working for hundreds of hours with no problems whatsoever. Unbelievably effective. I can spray air into dessicant spheres all day and not turn them pink. All you gotta do is drop the line pressure every once in a while to automatically drain the internal tank. It squirts hard, so figure out a drainage solution.
