Muscle cars excelled at having enough off the line torque to shred the skinny 1960s bias ply street tires and be a generally terrifying experience if rapid acceleration was requested.

Basically all these old cars sucked at handling and stopping, but excelled at acceleration in a straight line. If that is what you are after, the Pontiac wouldn't be bad for the money, even though many modern econoboxes would out accelerate it as well as out handle it.
Actually many modern econoboxes would out accelerate as well as out handle almost any car discussed in this thread. If you like the noise and look of a muscle car buy one. Just don't get sucked into stop light races by kids in rice burners!

This reminds me of an interesting sight I saw while driving home last summer. A C6 Corvette with a noisy exhaust was rump-rumping away at the stop light in front of my car, and in the lane beside him was a Tesla roadster (electric powered - they do u7nder 4 secs. 0-60 and a mid 12 sec. 1/4). When the light changed the Vette driver booted it and laid rubber, presumably to impress the cute blonde lady driving the tesla. She just floored it and in dead silence and without a chirp of the tires she motored away from the Vette leaving him in her dust.

Nicely summed up - do you want to make a lot of noise or do you just want to have good performance?
