I want another E30 so bad, wish this could be it... http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/1914462451.html

Im selling my 1989 325i.

asking 5500 dollars or Trade for a boat possibly.

Chasis has a tad over 200k and engine and transmission supposedly had 79k when i picked it up of craigslist.

Pictures and video to show the smoke (At bottom) included below.

Ok so i got the car together but the engine has some issues. it runs great however it smokes and burns oil (no leaks) i found out the previous owner of this engine use to street race (of course after i had purchased the engine)

the engine pulls hard and strong, does not over heat and idles great. just needs rings and you are set. I got compression and leak down tests from a board member from when he tested it while the PO had the engine but they just dont mesh with how the engine should run with those numbers honestly. this engine will need new rings to be good again and honestly i am really tired of working on this car. i built this car from scratch when it was in terrible shape and i do not want to pull the engine tear down and put back together. thats not how i visioned my summer back in March when i bought started this project. im taking a loss as a lot of the parts were purchased new for the car except the exhaust and shocks and im marking even the new parts down

Also i have replaced the blower motor, Resistor pack as well as the heater core and tubes. all AC lines are present and still installed and i have replaced all O rings as well from HVAC box to AC lines as i had planned to adapt E30 lines to S52 AC compressor in the future. S52 compressor is included.

it is unfortunate that i have spent well over 7k in this project including car only to get ripped off on a bad motor that smokes. i have all receipts to show the money i have spent as well. almost all parts for the swap came from United BMW

heres what im asking below.

Clean shell, clean title

These prices are marked down from what i paid over the past few months as i know i will never get full price.

If someone buys this car all they need to do is replace the rings and they would be good to go and the car would be a perfect daily driver. you can drive the car as it sits now it just smokes and burns oil which is annoying.

Is the price list for demonstration purposes or are you parting it out?

In reply to DukeOfUndersteer:

I have never seen the interior of this model. Really modern looking for a 21 year old car. I like!

Wow... those S52 swap parts prices seem cheap. Makes me 'almost' wish I find something more serious when I pull the head to replace the broken rocker on my m20.

GPS: Duke isn't selling the car. It's a CL post he found.

I saw this and was interested, except--- man... $5500 for an E30? I'm looking for something along these lines (even without the S52), but it seems like a bit much for a car with unknown engine and transmission problems. "Smoking" is rarely just that. After you re-ring it, you'll be pulling the head again for a valve job.

You don't need to pull the head to replace a rocker! Remove the hood, rad & tilt the engine so you can slide the cam out the front.

Yeah $5500 is iffy. I picked up a solid, strong S52 w/ OBD-I harness, euro maf, ZF trans, LSD and 328 driveshaft for under 3k total. That ain't no $2700 roller there.

That's really nice, but it's not $5500 nice.

I'd find myself a nice free boat and start talking trade. They're out there.

I love the "all you have to do is re-ring it."

Personally I see no point in rebuilding the bottom end if you aren't going to rebuild the top end as well. Then might as well do new chains and tensioners (tahts $400+ in parts alone) a new VANOS unit (rebuild it yourself for cheap or go with Dr.Vanos) and now your "just re-ring" it is well into the thousands of dollars.

That said, I can't see the pics, but gathering up all the swap parts alone is a PITA especially going to OBD-I. Which I'm assuming it is, GPS is it?

I sold my 200k mile 318is for almost that much........and by almost I mean only a few hundred away.

he makes it sound like replacing the rings should be a cheap simple job. It's going to need a complete refresh of the bottom end. Not worth the asking price IMO

Well, it has the OBD-I intake manifold but the air tubes are still on the exhaust manifold. Inconclusive.

I'd be more tempted to buy a late 90s M3 for that kind of money, they can be found, make sorting parts a lot easier...

You ... you ... you ...

I'm trying to buy winter wheels here and you're showing me a cheap 914 up the road from where I live.

Guess I need to check that out with a view to using it as an HPDE vehicle.

Maybe... Although I still don't see how there's enough clearance to raise the engine that much. The engine is already practically against the firewall. Bear in mind, it's on Cyl #1, so everything has come completely out. Plus, I also want to make sure it didn't break due to valve float and piston contact. It's really a shame... the valve train otherwise looks brand new - the synthetic Sonic used really did its job. This of course, makes my decision on whether to replace just the busted one or all of them that much harder. Normally, I would replace all of them, but it just looks so damn clean.

If I seem a little bitter, bear in mind, I got two freakin' auto-x events in before it broke... I don't drive the car otherwise. If this is what it's going to be like, I need a different car.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a late 90's M3 for $5500 unless you're planning to gut it into a track car. Otherwise you're just asking for a car that's been neglected. There are just too many potentially annoying little issues that can add up on an E36 that while it may be fine to drive, can turn it into an miserable car to live with.

He's down to $4500 on Bimmerforum.com. Still a hard sell if I need to re ring it. And then do the valves.
