I can't seem to find the DeLorean build that somebody was doing in the project forum. Google is not being helpful. Anyone have a link to it? Need to send it to somebody who has one.

I assume this came up because of the Top Gear episode. I'm watching now and had to grind my teeth when I heard
the thing weighed quite a lot because of the stainless steel panels
How the berk does stainless steel weigh more than normal steel?
In reply to Stampie :
ummm,
Weight: Mild Steel weighs less than that of stainless steel. Due to hardening properties stainless steel weighs more and has lesser occupancy as it is difficult to handle in the manufacturing process.
Ok I had to research more.
According to this chart 304 stainless like the Delorean is 495lbs per cubic foot.

According to this page normal steel is 490 per cubic foot.

That's a 1 percent difference in weight. I wouldn't consider that a factor at all.

By the time you add in paint and undercoating, the stainless is probably quite a bit lighter.
For design work, I generally think of them as about the same.

6 minutes before this post you were going to admit you were wrong :]
A Delorean is essentially a plastic car with stainless steel panels glued on top of it. In effect there are two layers of body on the thing, which adds up to a lot of unnecessary weight.

Nope, a friend of mine today told me her CFO drove a DeLorean to work that he's (still) restoring and I said i'd send her this thread to send to him.
