You mean not every woman has to wear a hijab?
I'm not as emotionally invested in Detroit as a lot of the locals are, partly because I don't live as close (I'm about 40 miles from downtown). The city has suffered for decades from a variety of issues, mostly economic. It was (and still kind-of is) a one-industry town, and when that industry suffered, the city did, too. Corruption was a major issue, too. All big cities have some level of it, but Detroit's seemed to be worse, or maybe the poor economy made the consequences of it worse. Now they are faced with issues related to the fact that the city is sized and set up for 2M people and it has less than half of that now. That means vacant homes and buildings, city services that are too big and expensive for the population to support, etc.
It is coming back, but part of me suspects that the comeback is being somehow pushed or exaggerated in the media in the hopes that talking about it will make it happen more quickly. Which, it certainly could, perception is everything. But there are good things happening, more young people are moving in, there are more restaurants and such, and all four major sports teams will once again be playing downtown.
Navigating in that city is a huge pain in the ass, though.
How does anyone feel about the 15th, first thing in the morning?

That sounds pretty good. I'll see if my Aggies can go.
A few pics of the things that interested me.
LeMans winning GT
Interior of the ND Miata roadster
Kinda cool paint job, my guess is this wont be there on the public days
Lutz and Fisker trying to pursuade people to drop huge coin on badly tarted up products from other people with full use of the JC PEnny catalogu and middle school boys doing the Design work.
Andretti Autosport Global Rally Cross VDubBug. I liked this.
No explanation needed.
Three in a row.
WANT
Alexander Rossi's winning car from the 100th running of the Indy 500. Kinda cool
That's Pagenaud's championship winner in the background.
This was cool. All the winners names
Two restomodded AC long hoods on the Michelin stand.
Should I have gone and decked them all?
Biggest surprise, I, like most have written off Elio as vapor ware. While no sign of production coming, this is far more than I expected from them.
Were the rodents doing this the whole time? Lol
Thank you for the beetle images too- I like that very much too...
None of your pictures worked for me
Adrian, you work for ford? I need to take you out for a free meal sometime...
also I plan to be at the autoshow Thursday, I hate the crowds and love the perks of my current job. Keep an eye out for a tall guy wearing a M-Sport polo.

That's odd, they did when I checked the thread a half-hour ago, and now they don't.

Unfortunately I'm not going back. I was just there this morning. It's about time we did another SE Mi meet up for beer and burgers.

Agghhh, I hate Google Photo's. I never had an issue with Picassa web, but all sorts of issues with Photo's. Some can see them, some can't, some could but now can't.
Try this link to see them all. Link-e-dink

Google Photos is ruined for photo-sharing. Guess Google didn't like giving all that bandwidth away. I've started using Photobucket. So far, so good, but now my pics are getting saved to two different places.
Does my link work for people?
In reply to Adrian_Thompson:
Sadly, linky no worky either.
I've thought for a couple years that Detroit would be a fun town to visit these days.
Actung!! I really wish VW would stop teasing us with microbuses!!!!!

Is there a local GRM crew in the Detroit area?
I'm up in Auburn Hills every few weeks, and would love to catch up with a group of GRMers once the weather warms up. I'm not local so I'm sure there's a million cool things in the area I don't know about.
I used to work in the auto industry. I made it several years during industry week and once for the charity night thing. Much different feel to it from the public days. I found many more knowledgeable people to talk to about specifics on a car etc. Being able to sit in the Aston Martin DBS was fun during the charity event.
I have plans to take the family but it is highly dependent on getting the school schedule and my work schedule to sync up right.
Detroit had seen better days and luckily has some glimmers of sustaining some kind of comeback. I actually live in the city not some surrounding suburb. There are odd great things going on and more terrible things compared to 10-15 years ago. I kind of got a perspective on the hater-aid that has been focused on Detroit from an older polish immigrant back in the early 1990s. He said that Detroit was THE place to be early to mid 20th century and the wealthy Detroiters didn't play nice so that built up a nation-wide dislike of the place. Just hasn't subsided. So now that things are tough people just want to bulldoze the whole place.
I don't blame some for the hate, I think it was TIME magazine that ran photos of abandoned Detroit factories and stated that they were the current state of Detroit. The Detroit newspapers pointed out that two of the three "current state" photos were of buildings demolished decades earlier. TIME acknowledged it's use of stock archival photos. So we get fake news hate on top of the real bad news.
Within Detroit and the outer suburbs we have:
- Fiat Chrysler NA HQ
- Hyundai NA HQ (Kia something here to)
- Toyota R&D facility
- Ford HQ
- GM HQ
- Nissan R&D
- VW HQ was here but now only some functions not sure
- who knows how many auto supplier HQs?!?!
So come on down to the North American International Auto Show!!! You too Carguy!!

We tend to meet up for beer and BS 2-4 times a year. Normally in the Birmingham, Royal OAk, Bloomfield area. I'll see about doing something in Feb or March.
