I haven't watched all of his videos, but the couple I have are very impressive. Plus it sounds like he is making his designs open source if anyone else wants to use them. 

What sort of gains does this give in a Miata?

Well, it's really good for your YouTube ad revenue, which means you can buy a better Miata ;)

More likely it's just a good platform for the experiment. I'm not a YouTube consumer myself unless it's Adam Neeley, but I'm going to have to check this guy out. Forget the freevalve, that open wheel boxster is sexy!

BTW, don't bother emailing me letting me know about this insane new technology that's being installed in an old Miata. Everyone else in the world already has.

Theoretically even performance to a standard engine (if you used the stock cams as your 'map'). 

I'd think to really benefit from freevalve type valve control, you'd need massive time messing around on a dyno. 

Still, very very cool, and would be really fun to work on.
