Let me start with....I'm retired and have a lot of time to let ideas ferment, OK?  If I took a set of 5 spoke wheels and machined them down to create a wide-5 "hub" would they hold up? Specifically, I saw a set of cheap VW Imola wheels. I have no idea how thick the spokes are, but my deviant imagination can picture holes drilled at the end of the spokes and studs pressed in there. Wide-5 wheels can be had for $30 or less to go with them. What say the hive?

Depends entirely on the wheel construction, but given something with enough material it should work.

I've seen wide five adapters that are just steel plates with a 5-on-4.5 center and a wide five on the outside. I bet brake clearance was an issue.

On edit: Real makes an aluminum one for $125/each that looks pretty cool.

I would go with the Real Wheels adapters like snailmont5oh said. Wide 5 wheels are set up to work with 5/8" studs. I would be worried that the spoke of the wheel may not be strong enough with such a large hole for that stud.

wide 5 has a small and a large  lugbolt thread ,

the buses , I think 1964-1970 had the larger ones ,

I just looked up an Imola rim picture ,  are the spokes solid  and flat on the back ?  would you machine out the center 4 bolt pattern ?

seems like a neat idea ,

I would also wonder about the offset.....

If the spokes weren't solid I'd just pass on the idea. This is "thinking out loud" to figure a way to get 15x10 wheels on a Challenge car that will have a 4x100 bolt circle. Offset with any wide-5s I've found isn't right, so I would have to relocate the wheel center.

The "not strong enough" part is what I'm wondering about, especially for any aluminum wheel center that's cast.

As for the 5/8 studs, I suppose one could weld new tabs to the rim and make the stud size any standard stud, like a 12 mm or 1/2"

"Wide-5" is not the same bolt pattern as VW.  It's something like 10.5" circle diameter, basically as large as you can fit inside the shell of a 15" steel wheel.  Makes the expendable component (the wheel) relatively cheap while still being light, while the non expendable component (the hub) can be made out of aluminum or magnesium or whatever and you can still not wory about having to throw it away after Goofus clips your Modified.

OK......VW is 205mm bolt circle.......for the Wide 5
