Today im trying to stay under 4k to stay in open loop. Well see what that does.
Also, i pumped up the tires from 32 (best ride) to 35. It rides like ass now, so im headed to let the air back out.

Under 4k and gentle throttle would be Closed Loop (reading the O2 sensor and aiming for stoich, vs open loop where it follows fuel tables and generally runs richer), but I get what you're saying.
150 miles so far today.....
All under 70. Much more relaxing way to go. And not much slower than keeping up with traffic in the left lane. Less tiring as well.
Im filling up at the station near the house where i filled up this morning (27.2mpg yesterday) to see what i got by staying in closed loop.
I wonder if a different rear end gear would get you the cruising speed you desire and better mileage by dropping the revolutions?
The acceleration would suffer a bit, so perhaps paired with a turbo?
If i had money, and didn't have obd2 testing, id be game. But.....
A 3.6 rear diff would help, Miatai really rev on highway driving. Perhaps a rear bumper cut mod to help clean up the air flow a bit.
Mine never did better than 25 mpg and usually 20-22 but it mostly autocrossed and had a 4.3 diff....
Yeah, the OBDII issue is a pain to deal with on the early turbo kits. I have the same problem, so Dad's NB will stay mostly stock until its either sold or handed down. MAkes the V8 conversion a bit more appealing since it has a functional OBD port and nearly everywhere outside of Cali will accept it.
Lots of rear bumper cut posts on the web for the NB. It doesn't look as good as it does on the NA. However, there are more than one way to skin a cat. There are aftermarket diffusers available too.
I'd probably look at buying or building a rear diffuser to close off the rear bumper area and improve the undercar air flow. Some coroplast picked up after election day and some time spent cutting and trimming while goofing around under the car and you'll have not spent much money so any improvements would simply be gravy.
If you have the butterfly brace added, then its even easier since the coroplast merely needs to be fixed to the brace and extended slightly (plus cut to clear the exhaust and service points.)
Add a flexible airdam to the front to help reduce front end lift and drag.
A 3.6 rear end ratio sounds like an option as well, especially if you need to rebuild or add a LSD.
Just filled up. 32 mpg. This was 90% interstate, no 4k or above. Just changing driving habit. Will continue the habit change to provide more data points for data reliability.
I misspoke. Should have said speed setting or RPM limit instead of driving happened. I didn't change how I accelerate break or anything else just the RPM and travel speed.
