If i had a 2zz MRS (and id certainly like one) i'd have to make sure i could move the lift engagement down to a point where it would be a pretty smooth transition.

I'm driving around a corolla XRS right now and the 6700rpm switchover causes a huge power bump that would be pretty unappreciated in a short wheelbase car trying to corner 10/10ths.

Thats what makes it exciting!

In reply to singleslammer: When looking for one, ask when the engine was replaced, or documentation on when the precats were gutted. If you can't document either expect oil consumption, power loss and the inevitable swap

Oh god, seeing your avatar in an MRS thread reminded me i have an 'extra' Insight and i've seen a mid-engine swap into one. Horrible temptation!

I already had an MRS. Good point for the OP though.

These will hopefully be barging tools, plan on getting the car, and gutting pre cat. Than learn it before swapping the 2zz.

In reply to Vigo: ECU swap? or are you holding out for a pfc?

And also as much as a 2zz mrs is a great a idea. Waiting for a nice swapped mr2 from http://www.primemr2.com/cars-for-sale.html isn't a terrible idea either.

Umm, hello? Mid-engine K swap?

Just spent a half hour looking at all the MR-Ss available nearby and I can't believe the prices these command. I would think a nice 100k mile one would be 6 grand. They are more like 8-9. Didn't see a single hardtop equipped one either.

It's because of the time of year. Was pretty easy to find a nice one for about $5k if you were willing to travel a couple months ago.

The hardtops are quite rare, and very expensive. If you really want one, you're better off buying a car that doesn't have it, then importing a top from Europe for $2500-$3000. Otherwise, you might very well never get a car.

However, in NY there was a MINT white one with a matching hardtop with 60k-ish miles for sale for a couple months for $11k earlier this year.

The forums tend to have better pricing 5 - 6k for high miles. You're not going to find a hard top cheap. 8-11 can get you a swapped one if you hold out. But I want to do it my self.

I love my boosted (214@ wheels) 1zz 6speed spyder, and the good news is that my Well sorted setup (engine, tuned emanage, full turbo setup minus 6 speed) is for sale as I'm boosting a 2zz that I had lying around See my ad in open classified and my build blog on here, called "mr2 spyder commute attack car"

They don't have to be expensive to make phenomenal sportscars out of. Get one and don't look back.

I'm really leaning this way as my next fun car. I'm in the process of selling my SW20 and I may turn this money into the a higher mileage MRS and a 2ZZ swap. Just looking into the smog issues and if I can do this myself.

I decided to do a "ghetto" Elise by building a Spyder with swap for the engine to the 2zz. The 2003 car I bought was under $5k at an auction with 103k on the chassis. I bought it knowing that the SMT had issues and we converted it to a 6spd manual. I have made some minor performance mods ie exhaust, intake and fuel injection before I can invest in the 2zz. So far I am quite pleased with the Spyder and find that it is a pretty good daily driver. One does have to plan out your day because the cargo options are limited although quite a bit can be stored in the "frunk" of the car. It does have better cargo options than the Elise I had several years ago plus it is much easier to enter/exit than the Elise.
I am in the process of tuning the chassis now and my first step is going square on the wheels/tires(16) rather than the staggered(15/16) stock configuration. I also have new struts and springs to add in when the weather improves and I can work in the driveway again.
There is a pretty good Spyder community out there but aftermarket supply is limited compared to the Miata world I was so familiar with from 20+ years of Miata. YMMV

I'm running 15" tires f+r with 205/50 fronts and 225/45 rears on the street and on track 225/45 square. It works pretty well.

What aftermarket part are you seeking that you can't find?
