I have an ongoing half-assed search for a "forever" tow rig to handle anything I throw at it. Is this $1500 2500HD worth it, or would I be better off buying a "nice" one for closer to $10k? Cragslist linkydoo
I am happy to work on the thing myself and a flat or utility bed is part of the plan anyway. I figure I'll need to do injectors and most suspension components. What else should scare me away?
98? That should still be a 6.5....

Where do you see 98? It's a 2002 2500HD.

A $1500 Duramax - never see them for that. I'd be on that like pronto.
My bad, no coffee yet. Read the mileage as the year...
Definitely, needs everything or a plan for everything. Injectors aren't bad to do, but does take some normal but special tools to do the job. Injection pump and a complete trans rebuild should be on the map.
Well, email sent, we'll see what happens.
For that money, I'd get it. It might be a money pit and you unload it, but it's only a $1500 investment.
I'm pretty certain at that mileage injectors have already been done. Its rare they last past 150k with some dying around 80k. The rest of the engine assembly should be good for another 100k if it was maintained well.
The trans is likely fine unless it was abused. At stock power levels, the Allison will go a LONG time.
Don't these trucks rust like nobody's business? I'd be looking REAL hard at the bottom of that thing.

Cab corners, rockers, and brake lines do although I haven't heard of too many rusting out structurally.
My only experience with diesel trucks were two Cummins Dodge Rams. Both were early 12v models, 2WD. They were used and abused and received minimal maintenance. When I left the company, one had 750,000 miles and the other 500,000 miles. The engines were untouched. One transmission was replaced due to a shop error, but the other was untouched. So from my expereince, diesel trucks run forever and need nothing. YMMV.

I'm not a Chevy truck guy, but I agree that looks like a steal. $1500 for a running 4x4 in our area? Don't wait. Take off work if you have to.
Hey! Jersey shore! I used to visit Pt. Pleasant Beach a million years ago. Nice place.
Well, it's cheap enough. I'd take a look at it. Prolly won't last long, unless it's made of rusty Swiss cheese.

Jersey Shore is actually a town in PA, confusingly.
$1500 Duramax? BUY IT NOW! So what if it's rusty, even at 10x that price most of these trucks around here seem to at least need rockers.
That thing looks like it's been reamed out but still pry worth 1500 ...
In reply to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ :
$1,500 + $1,500 = $6,000.
Buy it, put $1,500 into it and have a $6,000 truck.

I wonder if, as it is not possible to swim in the Atlantic Ocean at Jersey Shore, PA, so too it is that nobody Berkeleys in Intercourse, PA?
Make sure the oil doesn't smell like diesel. If it's 'making oil,' then the injectors are leaking into the valve covers on LB7 Duramax.
My Duramax went a long damn time with minimal needs and I kinda regret selling it 'before something big' went wrong. It was a later LLY that had several improvements over the first gen. LBZ are the 06.5 model year and the most sought-after.
$1500 seems unbelievable for any 4wd Silverado.
PS...Those mofos take FOREVER to warm up in cold weather if you want cab heat, but mine started instantly in -7 degree weather without a block heater.

Well, Intercourse is pretty much right in the heart of Amish country. Based on the average size of their families, I would say that's probably not the case

I had an LBZ with over 450k miles when I sold it, still got $11k for it (paid $6500). Even factoring in the fuel and parts I put into it over the couple years of owning it I still made about $3k. Buy this, fix anything small it needs (or even if/when it needs injectors, you can do that yourself), drive it for a while, and still sell it for a profit. It will be like having a free truck for a while, a very capable truck.
