I do mean this in the least offensive way possible, but it seems that every poorly lit low-res image of a beater for sale on Craigslist has been photographed at a gas pump.
This is a memory of me before I lost a decent chunk of my money at the fuel pump
Note: I am smiling while saying this. It was worth it. :-)

100%. I don't get it. Why?
In reply to David S. Wallens :
I have probably ten more of the Volvo, but do note the bumper sticker under the louvers of the vintage Mazda...

You know, that might be it. Gas stations often have some really good lighting.
Contrasts really well against the background at night, too.

I've noticed this too - my theory is the dudes driving around and realizes he hates the car and makes an instant decision to sell the car - stops to spend more money at the gas station......might even say he needs to sell quickly (before it breaks again)
I've apparently been wasting my time washing windows and updating my fuel logs :) I don't think I have any pics of cars at gas stations other than that joke post of the Tesla charging, and that was for a build thread on GRM :)

My windows don't need washing all that often, and I mostly don't bother with fuel logs. The 3-4 minutes it takes to fill up the tank is just about right for a little bit of photography, now that I've got cell phone with a decent camera on it in my pocket all the time. :)
As for the "for sale" photos, my guess would be that people don't want their house in the ad photos for privacy reasons, and so the gas station is an easy place to get an anonymous shot of the car.

My guess is to avoid giving away where you live.
Last year I spotted someone using several tripods full of professional lighting gear for a gas pump photo shoot. That was weird.
It's not that I think it's an ideal venue or anything, it's just a sort of "oh, right, out in the fun car and I've stopped; I should nab a pic..."
Have hundreds of car pics but only one at the pumps c. 1980 in Alturas CA. Guess pics at the pump never struck me as being photogenic.
