So mine has holes and rattles. Surprise.
Should I make a metal race dash? Or try and find a replacement?

All of the top panels of the neon dash come off so dont have to mess with the part the VIN is on.
I've had two neons and both of them had dash issues. On my current one, i was lucky enough to find a northern car in a southern junkyard. The exterior and mechanicals were rusty and the interior plastics were great!
when he said "race car dash", i interpreted it to mean that the stock dashboard would be yanked out and replaced with something else- which means that the part with the VIN tag would be coming out..
here is what the dash area of my Neon looks like right now... still undecided on keeping the stock cluster and the top of the dash...
Getting replacement dash pads and pieces is fairly easy. Other than the amount of work involved, I don't know what the downside would be to fabbing up a metal dash, however, as mentioned there is a wee problem with the VIN tag. The VIN tag is attached to the plastic skeleton/underdash/dashframe or whatever. I've heard some state laws can be picky about what you can do with that tag.
Buy another stock dash pad and get a louder stereo.
The pads in sunny florida are gold. Not a one in the yards have one unless its cracked. Vin plateis no issue tho. It would be fabbed to have the ac vents tho.
