Hi everyone- I need to pick up and Mercedes engine/trans that is located just outside of Toronto. I just sent in the paperwork to renew my passport.

What can I expect to encounter at the border? Do I need to provide any sort of paperwork or receipt?

I am trying to coordinate the pick up with a work trip to Rochester where I will be driving a Suburban.

Thanks in advance! Cory

Used parts shouldn't be a huge deal, but carry any sort of documentation you can come up with. If it was bought from a business, make sure you have the bill of sale. If its a private sale, get a signed bill of sale, and if it was advertised online or somewhere, bring a copy of the sale ad. I've heard of people (coming north) who have had issues where customs doesn't believe the price on a handwritten bill.

I'd phone US customs and ask them what you should do. I have stopped by the Canada customs office a few times, and they are always more than happy to help me out with information.

I hauled an engine over the border between BC and WA a couple years ago, they didn't even bat an eye.
I'd say have a bill of sale ready to go just in case, but wouldn't worry as long as your ID is in order with no red flags.

Just throw it all in a crate nailed shut with "Bomb Parts, from Syria with love" stencilled on the side.

You should breeze right through.

PS- We are now all on watch lists. You're welcome.

Eh, what's one more list anyhow.

Customs might go like this:

"You have a bill of sale?"

"How did you learn of the sale item from your side of the border?"

"Can you please produce that source?"

Other than that, its is just scrap metal to them.

Guys- I am picking up the stuff on Thursday. Do you know if they are going to try to tag me with a duty on the value of the engine/trans? Is there a dollar value limit that you can get in without paying any duty? Just trying to cover all my bases before the trip.

get another junk engine/trans to haul down with you... just tell them it's along for the ride because you didn't have time to take it out... when you come back across with the new engine, just tell them it's the same one..

If it's over 25 years, be sure to let them know, there should be no duty on any vintage auto parts.

Too bad it's not a US-built car, the only words you need to know then are "US goods returning"

The engine came out of a parted out 1989 300ce. It was a newer model engine, but I could prove that it came out of this particular car.

I grabbed the parts yesterday and made it back across the border without incident. It was extremely cold and dark out when I was come back across. I said that I picked up some car parts over in Hamilton and was only there a few hours. They didn't check for sale ad or bill of sale. The Yukon I was in was black with darker windows so I didn't look like Fred Sanford. I got lucky and am super excited with the twin turbo m104 engine that I picked up. Thanks guys..
