A friend is looking at wheels for his BMW. Should he have hub centric wheels or does it matter?

Hubcentric - either by wheel, spacer, or by adapter ring.

BMW's use lug bolts, so lug centric is just one of those really bad things.

as an aside, you need to pull one of the lugbolts out to adjust the parking brake

Yeah, you gotta love those German cars and their LUG BOLTS.

There used to be companies that advertized in the mag European Car offering a set of 4 "studs" to give you at least 1 at each wheel so you had something to hang the wheels on while you inserted the other bolts...not sure this product is still sold/available.

what is so bad with lugbolts? I have never had an issue with them... and ALL my cars, the BMW, Saab, and Fiat use them.

There is nothing wrong with lug bolts... in fact, to an engineer there is only one interface to fail as opposed to studs where there are two.

You can buy studs and nuts if you like (Gorilla 12x1.5 from Summit Racing are about $30 + whatever lug nuts cost) but you still need a hubcentric wheel or an adapter ring unless you like to feel like all 4 wheels are out of balance.

Ugh my E30 came like that. The P.O. claimed it had a "shimmy" at highway speeds. With the car off the ground I could spin a wheel by hand and watch it move up and down.
