I've owned and maintained an E21, E30, E36, E90, E83, E92M3, and F22. Plenty of good advice above.

Fair warning: If you decide to stretch your budget and pick up a used E90, best if you budget $2k-$3k per year for parts and labor to keep it running.

It may surprise you and be cheaper than that to run, but be prepared rather than ticked off.

My E21 was cheap and simple enough for a poor college student like me to deal with, no problem. My E92 always has something not quite right, and it's all hellishly expensive. Changing the battery was several-hundred-dollar trip to the dealer.

I'm not sure how many bricked BMWs it took for Autozone to put out an APB that they needed to connect an external power source to change the battery. Ridiculous. So far, the E46 is my tech ceiling when it comes to BMWs.
