Does anyone have any idea what the towing capacity on an EF Civic is?
1000 lbs. I used to occasionally tow a 16' sailboat that was about 900 with my wagovan 4wd, and it was ok. The hitches for them are not really substantial, which is a big limiting factor.
SWMBO towed a 50cc scooter for a friend of hers using my EF hatch and my tow dolly. Not an ideal situation but it worked and she did so up soem of the more challenging grades here in Western NC, so yes I would think a small AL trailer and ATV could be towed with an EF. Once again not ideal, but would probably work. On a side note the scooter went back to Charlotte in the bed of my cousins F250, much better in my opinion.
Tow dolley is massive overkill (weight &width) to move a scooter. Oddly enough recently ive been scheming to bolt a tow ball to the tongue of my dolley so i can move my utility trailer on it. Kinda sucks when you want to take both somewhere. lol
Yeah, i think a utility trailer + atv is acceptable.
The hitch for my FWD Civic wagon literally just bolted through the sheet metal for the spare tire well, behind the bumper. You don't want to be pulling too much weight with that.
However, I did tow my Suzuki GS550E on a Harbor Freight trailer from Maine to Mass and back with no difficulty whatsoever. I'd say it could definitely tow a small ATV or a dirtbike. Don't know about both, though.
Yeah the hitches that are commercially available for the EF are terrible. I don't know why nobody makes (or made?) something that bolts to the frame rails like they do for newer cars. It would be very easy to fabricate something that bolted to the tow hook mounting points on the frame rails.
Here is an example of one someone fabricated. MUCH stronger than the ones that bolt into the spare tire area.

We fabbed a trailer hitch for a Supra right before last challenge and towed a trailer with and extra set of wheels, camping stuff and on the way back Spitfire engine and transmission so I think fabbing one shouldn't be bad.
