the reason i replaced the engine in my geo was that the egr became over plugged and caused one of the valves to burn out.

here comes the ignorance: what is an egr? can i get rid of it? i know it is an exhaust gas recirculater but other than that not much.

any input would be super.

thanks in advance.

may not directly apply to your motor but is informative:

You are right in that EGR is exhaust gas recirculation.

Basically taking the "intert" exhaust gas, and returing it to the intake to do various things.

First and foremost, being an intert gas, it slows down the reaction of combustion- which does two things- the primary goal to reduce NOx. But it also reduces power, since peak pressures are not as high.

Quite contrary to what I just wrote, if done properly (not likely on the Geo), EGR can help fuel economy. Since the gas replaces the air, one can run with higher manifold pressures- more throtte- and less pumping losses. In addition to that, EGR can allow the engine to run more advanced spark, since it's much less likely to detonate. SO, IF DONE CORRECTLY- all of that can add up to more gains than the losses in combustion efficiency.

Anyway, you should leave it on. Better for the environment.

Alfa driver nailed it. I remember reading an SAE paper, by saab, a bit ago on using EGR to reduce pinging and allowing you to run more boost in a turbocharged engine. I don't know if they actually have done this in production.

Yes. We do it in production. (although I don't speak for Saab...)

thought you guys would.. Seemed like a good idea. I work mostly on CI not SI stuff. I believe the paper was from the late 70's.

the reason i ask is because i dont want the egr causing another blown valve i don't care about the environment that much as i am allready driving a a geo. my economy is already good but i could use the extra power.

how do i get rid of it?

Unplug it, remove it, and block off the orifices.

(If that doesn't make the magazine I give up.)

If that doesn't do it, try penicillin.

It's not likely to help power all that much- it turns off when you go to high throttle.

And driving a geo isn't inherently enviromnentally friendly.

But do what you will...
